Acai-Cleanse Scams – Update

When I started writing my scam alerts, I started with a small list of sites – so I combined the “Kevin Hoeffers” of the world with the “Jenny Conrads” of the world into a single post. As time went by, my lists were getting larger and larger, to the point that I really needed to break them into separate posts.  So I have taken the Acai/Cleanse scams out of the original post and placed them where they belong – in a dedicated post right here.

I have also now started a list of the variations of the products being peddled by these sites, which is at the bottom of this post.

The net is rife with variations of the websites listed below. Many use the same (or similar) layout and many are heavily advertised. Sometimes the page changes from one fake persona to another. Sometimes a main page has one persona, while a subdirectory has another. Most uses a 2-part “Dynamic Duo” of products. Some are fake blogs, some are fake review sites. Almost all say you can get the products FREE if you just pay shipping… and then hit your credit card for a hefty fee.

Do a Google search for “Kitchill Burah” and see how many of these websites pop up. If you are foolish enough to believe what you read or give them your credit card number, you will regret it. You’ll be signing up for something much more expensive that is nearly impossible to cancel.

Some of the newer blogs are including a disclaimer at the bottom, pointing out that you might be charged if you don’t cancel. That is a good step. But they are still misleading with the fake before/after photos, fake first-hand accounts, fake personas, still sell the exact same products, still have phony (and often reused) comments, still have rampant complaints about customer service and inability to get refunds. There is still deception not covered in the disclaimers I’ve seen, which still makes it fraudulent.

So without further adieu, here is “The List” that is being constantly updated, along with brief notes on each one.

Feb 4 Update: I’ll occasionally note when and where I saw an ad for a particular url listed below. It’s not meant to be comprehensive, but to give a general idea of where the advertising is going for these sites.

Jan 14, 2010 update – I’m adding some of the new sites being advertised to this list.  Sites come and go and change quickly, so any of these sites on a given day may be different or not exist at all. I am also going through all of the older sites to see if they still exist today. Funny how many were so heavily advertised only a year ago and are gone already.

I will begin noting sites in red that existed a year ago and are now offline. This will be a good visual of how fast these sites come, take your money, and go.

acaiberrydetox.com – The landing page for some of these scams when you click on the “free trial” link. I can’t say yet that this actual site has been deceptive, but it is associated with known scammers, and pushes a dubious product. Also offers a “free trial.” It is best to avoid. Still operating as of 1/14/2010.
acaiberryscam.org –
An obvious and desperate attempt to appear to objectively review three Acai products – which are all related scams. Basically, it is a scammer telling you which of his products are best. Jan 2010 now forwarding to med-library.net, which is still a pro-Acai site.
acaiberrytruth.org –
An especially pathetic attempt to appear neutral, when all this site does is promote the variations of the Acai scams found elsewhere here. Sub-par web design looks like it was slapped together. Even uses the same “hands holding berries” photo that most fake blogs here is used. Jan 2010 now forwarding to med-library.net, which is still a pro-Acai site.
acaicomparison.com - A lame “review” site that only reviews those Acai products being peddled by scammers all over the internet. It does offer a disclaimer that says you will be charged before your trial ends and has an extensive “terms” page – but why would an “independent” review site even need to warn about a trial period, hmmm? This site claims to be 100% impartial and unbiased, which is hard to believe when it is pushing three products so heavily advertised by scammers. Take a look at grantscompared.com for an almost identical “review” site. Site is blank 1/14/2010.
acaifacts.org –
Another weak and phony attempt at “ranking” different Acai products, which are all actually related. 1/15/2010 – Site still exists.
acaihealthtest.com
– Another fake blog, though a different template. Typical Acai/Cleanse pitch along with a couple of “reviews” that happen to all be good and link to a page to get your contact info and has deceptive references to Dr. Oz, Oprah, and Rachel Ray. sashasdietblog.com –

secretofdiets.com

Same Acai/Cleanse, same blog feel, same news picture, same “stomach” picture used on other sites here. Uses the name “Tonya Edwards.” 1/14/2010 – Has a generic diet blog feel, which doesn’t show any Acai at first glance, but I still don’t trust it!
tracysweightloss.com -
Typical Acai/Cleanse fake blog scam, reusing text and layout. Uses name “Tracy Johnson” from Cincinnati. Noticed a long disclaimer by 2/11/09 and being advertised on Hotmail on 2/13/09. 1/14/2010 – Site is parked.

  1. Victoria Olsen says:

Yes, I just realized that Jenna, Nicolle and Monica are the same person. What a crock! People need to read about this scam so they don’t purchase these products.

  2. Victoria Olsen says:

Jenny Conrad has another name as well as the aka’s she already has. She goes by Jenna Patterson as well.

  3. Tisha says:

What do you need to do if you fell for one of these scams, so that your card is not charged!??!

    1. waffles says:

You might want to try calling your credit card company. You can try the Acai people, but I wouldn’t count on any results.

  4. LC says:

Thanks for this…I was wondering about Monica’s Diet Blog. Now I know for sure.

    1. waffles says:

Glad you found this site in time!

  5. narzel says:

I was trying to purchase genuine acai products and ran into a lot of these websites you have listed. I feel sorry for those that actually fall for these scams. For those that are actually looking to purchase authentic acai products, you might want to check out the Amazon Thunder line. They have their own website, and they also sell them on Amazon.com too. You don’t get a free trial, but you definitely don’t get scammed. I don’t know about the weight loss part yet, but it does seem to give you energy.

  6. Larry says:

I have been doing what I can to raise awareness of this scam myself, posting on my own blog and linking to another.

I thought it was interesting that so many of them claimed to be from Seattle (where I live) and wondered if maybe they were set up to display the city where the reader is located, making it look like somebody local in order to give it an extra bit of credibility. Since I see many of yours supposedly come from Las Vegas — the same ones that tell me they’re in Seattle — I think that answers my question.

    1. waffles says:

Hey Larry, excellent point on the changing location based on the reader. I was starting to have the same hunch, and you have confirmed it. Thanks for the input. Also, I looked at your blog and you do a nice job over there.

  7. chris says:

She has shown up here in Salt lake city and the ads claim she lives here as well. What a crock! She sure is pretty tho’ :) At least that was worth it.

  8. Renae says:

I noticed it because the site for Nichollesweightloss.com says the girl is from the town I live in In Nebraska which has only 8000-9000 people and there is no Nicholle Stevenson here and they say Rachelle Welch is from Cambridge Ne only 30 minutes from here. I checked several other sites and it was the same girl everywhere and simular stories. How do we stop this?

    1. waffles says:

Hey Renae – Yeah they apparently grab your IP info and make the blog appear to be from wherever you are located. I guess a lot of people like that “from your hometown” angle. Pretty sneaky.

  9. caryn says:

I ALSO FOUND ONE FROM “MY HOME TOWN” THE DAME WAS SARA COLLINS. IT IS SO DISCOURAGING!!!!

  10. Sharon says:

I very rarely order online for anything, but today I must have been weak and ordered the Colon Cleanser in an adv using Jeanie Rontero as the proof of weight loss. They automatically check another item, so $34.95 gets added to the (shipping cost) of 4.95. I don’t believe Oprah will be happy to know that her name is being used to get people to open up this web site. On my MSN page it is listed as OPRAH’S FLAT STOMACH SECRET. An yes, it refers to Dr. Oz and Rachael Ray. When you go to cancel your order, it will not allow you to cancel or to verify your order. However, I called my VISA card and it has already been charged to my account! How stupid can I be.

  11. vivian says:

I wonder if all the famous people know about this and if we all the consumer start to go to their sites and complain and keep complaining until the famous people stop letting this company use their names in adds for this product, since many people trust persons like Oprah and Rachel Ray and Dr. Perricone because if we as a public starts telling our friend and family the word will get out and if these famous people don’t want their reputations ruined they may with the power they have put a stop to this by sueing the company for false advertising and they will have to close down just like when other false statements are made they sue for more than the company’s and handle. Also if they are not related then the company with the actual product should stop them. Before they loose all creditablity. Anyway thanks for letting a senior citizen speak and maybe I will get back the money that they took even after I canceled.

  12. vivian says:

I must be getting old the product I am speaking about is the ACAI BERRY WEIGHT LOSS Again thanks

  13. caschmitzj says:

I ordered these products, then saw this website and cancelled in December, 2008. Guess what, they use MY hometown as the new address for the last Jeanie Rontero diet ads, etc. Is this some sort of stupid retaliation? or WHAT?

  14. beth says:

i am one of those who got scammed…yes it says it was on oprah and all you had to pay was a dollar for shipping. then, i got charged for $89 for a month supply. if that wasn’t enough, all these other companies got my cc number and starting signing me up for coupons and travel things. i was livid! i was naive and now i know better. i did get all my money back and then changed my debit card number..lol

    1. waffles says:

Hey Beth – well at least you were able to get your money back! Some people have said it can be a difficult task. Thanks for stopping by.

  15. adriana says:

I leave in Bethel, Maine. a town of 2.500 people. Where the people from the post office calls you by your first name, and everyone knows everybody. They picked the wrong town since… I do not know anyone with that name

    1. waffles says:

Yes, their theory seems to be that if they make this phony blog appear to be from someone in your city, then you will be more apt to buy it. But I’ve heard many people from small towns say the same thing… that no one lives there by that name! I guess the scammers are hoping you won’t notice.

  16. paradise says:

Ya – Home town here too. I also clicked on MSN home page – what’s good for Oprah is good for me. I was shocked when the person in the ad was from my town. My town is about 1000 people. I run a customer orientated business and either know everyone or know of them. Yup – noone here by that name.

    1. waffles says:

Heh I guess that trick doesn’t work very well in small towns like yours!

  17. Stacey says:

If you really want to see what the girl from the Jenny’s diet blog looks like, take a look at this site. It appears that the girl in the pic never lost weight but rather someone did a great photoshop job. The link is to a site that sells stock photo pictures and he un-doctored after photo is there.

  18. Stormy says:

So I wrote two emails and made some phone calls today to try to cancel my order, cause yes, I fell for the ‘Free 3wk trial’ . The number for the cleanser is disconnected, and no reply yet from the email. The acai berry place ive called three times, and everytime when the recording is done, someone picks up and it sounds all fuzzy. And suprise, they cant understand what Im saying EVERY SINGLE TIME! I feel so stupid. So i canceled my debit card and ordered a new one. I really hope that works. . .

    1. waffles says:

Unfortunately that might be your only option. At least you caught it in time!

  19. Tina says:

OMG! I just fell for this scam..I ordered both the Acai and the cleanser…I got supicious when each time I logged onto the website that the town had changed, but the picture of Michelle was still there. .. All of these towns were nearby mine..I thought that was weird.
I immediatley called and cancelled cards…
    Tina

  20. Cynthia Davis says:

As another “sucker” I fell for this Acai Berry ad! A “risk-free” trial that started on the day I ordered it, and was charged $79.96 exactly 14 days afterwards, I didn’t even have the product and yet I was supposed to be “trying” it out. I should have known better. But hopefully I can save another “sucker” from making the same mistake.

  21. I found this website that was giving a free sample of the acai berry all you had to do was pay the shipping. I ordered it and supposedly there is a pop up that comes at the end that says
you will be registed for all kinds of crap if you
do not send it back within 15 days. Since I did it from work there was no pop up so guess what happened. Not only did I keep getting charged for the acai berry i started getting charged for a bunch of other companies. It has been 5 months and I am still trying to clear it all with my credit card and ONE of the companies is still billing me every month. DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING THAT SAYS IT IS FREE. BULL CRAP

  22. anthony says:

it actualy says at the bottom: Individuals and testimonials shown on the website are paid models and not necessarily Pure Acai Berry Pro ™ users.

    1. waffles says:

Anthony – a few do, most don’t. I don’t recall seeing one blog that says that.

  23. Victoria says:

I’m glad you are wrote this site – it is sad so many people loose money to scams like these. Good for you!! :-)

  24. Amy says:

Oprah has a disclaimer on her website re this acai berry scam and I’m not sure about Rachel Ray. My guess is these adds are generated in Asia, thier copywrite laws are nonexsistent so they use celebs and sound bites that are very nonspecific….that is sort of a red flag, ya think?

  25. Caroline says:

I feel like such an idiot!! I almost feel for this scam, but something made me stop before finishing entering my CC #. The ad just popped up and I was so intrigued because it was from a girl from my (small) hometown, supposedly! After researching, i found this website and thankfully did not go through wioth ordering my “free samples”. The name they used in this ad was Jeanie Rontero….please BEWARE!!!!

  26. Bryan says:

Waffles… thanks for posting this scam info, you did and continue to do a great job! Whenever anyone orders anything from the internet, always use a credit card not a debit card because there is more protection for the consumer using a credit card. Even better, use a “virtual” credit card (available from your bank) with a low dollar limit.

  27. Katy says:

What do I do if I fell for this scam? I sent for the acai berry free sample. I recieved it in the mail and haven’t used it because I caught a news segment on my local news but, didn’t see the whole story. What should I do, my husband doesn’t know anything about this and they now have my credit card numbers………..I’m very worried about this. HELP!

  28. lady t says:

yep I got scammed as well and am now fighting the charges launched to my bank account. They basically emptied my account. And until my bank called I had no idea. So in all this fraud, where in the hell is the investigation. Where is the federal comm team and the attorney general. My bank said that on the day I went in to try to start cleaning this up I was the 4th in just that branch. Hello Mr. Attorney General wake up and start doing something. Does anyone know what other recourse you have? lady T

    1. waffles says:

Lady T – Please keep us posted as to what happens.

Katy – The best course of action I can suggest is to call your bank and have a new card issued. Contact FTC.gov to file a complaint if you are unable to resolve it.

  29. Colleen says:

Holy Cow! When you see a list like this it just tells you how many people are being duped. Copycats wouldn’t be popping up if some big money wasn’t being made.

Waffles – keep up the great work! I’m a new, but loyal follower!

  30. Not Kevin says:

Looks like the mainstream press is finally catching up with this story, like they did with the Grant scams:
    http://abcnews.go.com/Health/WellnessNews/story?id=7132495&page=1
    http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/03/23/acai.berries.scam/index.html

  31. Katy says:

I called the bank and explained everything to the gal and she cancelled my card. I did get a charge of $74.95 and she gave me the phone number of where to call. I did that and they told me they would refund my account and gave me a confirmation number. Called the bank back and she said she would watch for it and call me when and if I do get it back. Do you think that will stop them or will I still get a bill seeing as they have my home address. I did tell my husband and he was mad but, forgiving. I’m so mad at myself for falling for this scam just to lose weight. Thanks, Katy

  32. Katie says:

So I had always received these emails for this product, but I ignored them. Never went to the site, barely know about the product. Well my bank calls today and says unusual activity on my card. I was charged 5.95 for some Ultra Cleanse and then a $2 and a $1.95 charge for Acai Berry. Those charges posted at 10:10 this morning, my bank called me at 10:25 this morning, so tg they were quick on it and the card is now cancelled.

  33. Chris says:

What many of these sites do is “read” your ip address when you connect to their website. Using that info, they alter their website so it appears as if their site is from a local person when you visit (to double-check use a web anonymous proxy) – thats why someone in Seatle thinks it’s a local person in Seattle while some in Las Vegas thinks it’s about someone there. Comman practise with scam sites.

  34. Brittney says:

This is true the Helen Miller blog is fake.If you log out of your yahoo email and log into another one with a diffrent state a new page and picture will come up.

  35. Mike says:

Great site! Was working on my own when I found this one. Just want to get the information out on the scams. Would be easier to link to yours and send them your way. Promoting Amazon Thunder Acai products now. Makes it tough with all the scams. If only we could eliminate the greedy scams. Keep up the good work.

  36. Anthony says:

This is definitely a scam. I’m a webdesigner and if you look at the programming code for the website, you’ll notice that it uses an IP Address locater which then pulls the closest city and state name into the webpage. That’s why you get something like, Hi! I’m Helen Miller from __________…..” The code fills in this blank based on where the IP address of your connection is based through your ISP. Be aware of websites that use this type of programming code…it’s usually a sign of a scam.

  37. Liz says:

THAT is crazy. HOW sleazy can you get?? I was comforted by the fact that Kim of Kim’s Diet Plan was from my hometown and that it was supposedly seen on CNN and Rachel Ray… but it wasn’t… Acai was mentioned… then I just looked at another one and it said she was from my hometown too… VERY tricky. Thanks for your site – MUCH appreciated.

  38. Paula says:

I did a similar post on my blog about the “fake blogs” by these acai pushers. I had no idea the list was that extensive, though. Amazing resource here, hopefully people will begin to realize that there is no magic pill to weight loss, and these scammers are laughing their way to the bank after you sign up for these risk-free “trials”. Great post!

  39. Anonymous says:

What about a class action lawsuit against these criminals?

  40. Ms. N says:

I am one who foolishly tried to obtain trials from 2 different (or were they?) companies for shipping costs only. I noticed the extra charges on my bank account the same day they occurred and called the phone number related to the charges requesting to cancel. Since then, 5 days ago, I have watched unauthorized charges on my bank account made to at least 5 different company names totalling close to $200. I also noticed that there was an “International Transfer” fee, each time, amounting to less than $1.00 each time. However, this makes me think we could all be supporting scammers from outside the U.S.A., possibly terrorists? I actually got a cancellation Confirmation number from “AcaiBerryDetox.com” on one day, and two days later, my account was charged again. At the time I got the confirmation of my cancellation, I asked for the name of the company and was told “Acai Berry Health Products”. I asked who the “parent” company was, and was told the owner’s name was “Barry (Berry?) Folgers”. Yeah, I knew that was phony, but the operator (named Sa’rah) was very smooth and I could not get much else from her. I am going to have to cancel my bank card, but I am concerned they may continue to try to bill me via eMail and perhaps ruin my credit…What frustrates me is that I did attempt to search for a site like this one before I made the mistake, and did not find it. Instead, I only found the site that the scammers are evidently creating to appear as unbiased feedback….ughhh. Isn’t there a way you get this site to pop up whenever some poor schmuck clicks on the scammers many links? I know, they keep changing the names and it’s hard for any one person to keep up. Thanks for the opportunity to try to help someone who hasn’t made the mistake yet. Hopefully, there are some folks who find this site first and stop before it is too late!

  41. Roland Irish says:

I made the mistake of ordering-and didn’t see the ‘cancel within 14 days OF ORDER’ note until the CC went through. Bottles came in 9 days later-and we immediately called to cancel both-and the person on the phone just couldn’t understand us! We did send back the empty bottles as they instructed, and immediately canceled the debit card. Guess what-we got 2 charges for over $24 last week-and we canceled the card a month ago! Bank says the company HAS A LEGAL WAY TO GET AROUND A CARD CANCELLATION AND they can’t do a thing about it! We’re waiting for paperwork now-we can’t afford to completely cancel and wipeout our business checking account-where the card was tied to!

  42. Charlotte says:

I fell for the same thing. Thankfully I found this site a day after I purchased. How do you cancel your order (UK please) without cancelling your card? Please help ASAP!!!!!

  43. Dem says:

I caught it, on a different website. Then went, oh wait, I just did this shit on another website. Went back and tadaa, hidden fees. I’ve only been charged $6 so far thankfully. I’m calling them tomorrow to cancel it, and if not, if I call my card company and ask them to block all pay charges from them, would they do it?
If not, looks like I gotta get a new card…

  44. I also have been scammed by Acai Cleanse. I want their charges on my credit card taken off.How can I get this done? Sorry to say but I also fell for their false advertising.

  45. E. Harding says:

Don’t forget acaiforceformen.com- Or whatever site that is advertised below the title of this blog post.

  46. E. Harding says:

Aargh! Another one: premiumacaislimtrial.com- This ad first says: Seven Bogus Weight loss Claims You Must Avoid At All Costs- then, when you click on it, brings up premiumacaislimtrial.com- which uses all the seven claims! I guess the ad is a word of caution to any one who will use this product later.

  47. Margaret says:

Consumers be wear of Acai berry detox scam that tells you to order free trial. They charge your credit card and you will not know it until your bill arrives. The number on your bill is a none working number so they continue to charge.

  48. lalala says:

what you do is called this UK #: 011-422-0313-9910-4 and tell them to cancel the order. They will ask you for the product order #.

hope this helps everyone out there cause i realized that they have so many numbers and it took me an hr to get the RIGHT number.. cause some doesn’t work -.- good luck to all out there

  49. Rebekah says:

news5health.com I believe is new website that is fake website that is not on your list yet
