Another Acai-Cleanse Victim

So I was out with my kids and ex-wife, of all people. She was telling me about how her roommates, a young married couple, may split up due to financial reasons. The straw that broke the camel’s back completely floored me… the husband was fooled by the Acai/Cleanse scams seen everywhere online.

He was fooled by the phony CNN and news references. He was fooled by the Rachel Ray and Oprah references. He was fooled into thinking he was actually reading a blog by a regular person, and viewing real before/after photos. So he purchased it for his wife, and didn’t see that hidden $87 charge coming. They had very little money to begin with, and now they have no money at all in their account. It is causing a great strain on their marriage. He was trying to do something nice for his wife, and was victimized instead.

Not everyone is internet savvy. Not everyone has a keen eye for obvious false advertising. That’s why these scams continue to run. That’s why the Nigerian scam continues to work. The people falling for it aren’t stupid. They are being fooled.

I was sad to hear about her roommates because I am so familiar with the scam. After all the effort I’ve put into awareness of this scam, it was very sad for me to hear a first-hand account of someone being victimized by it. And to hear how it had ramifications beyond just financial.

Yikes – good luck. Hope you catch it in time.

My wife ordered this stuff recently. They called on the phone and she instructed them to cancel it when they told her that should would need to cancel after the trial. Is that good enough? Is this the same scam? What do I do to make sure this is cancelled?

Craig – I wish I had an answer. I’d like to think that speaking with them was enough, but it’s hard to know for sure. At the very least, keep a close eye on your bank statements. Or you could call your bank and have a new card issued to be certain.

Come on $87 ruined there marriage? Give me a break.

It couldn’t be the fact he bought his wife a weight loss product basically telling her that she is fat?

It was the last straw for a young couple with financial problems. Times are hard and getting scammed will only makes things harder. You want to defend that? Nice try “anon.”

Dude, look at the Google ads on your site. “AudrySkinSuccess.com” is featured… the very same programs you’re campaigning against. How can you justify this site when you’re making money from the very scams you’re trying to stop?

    1. waffles says:

Bo – I check the ads on here every day and filter out the dubious ones, which is far more than most sites. If I am failing at that, then perhaps I should find a new advertising partner. And thanks for the link ;-)
