1979 Prediction of the $320,000 Cars in 2011

On December 30, 1979 an article entitled “Why Does Everything Cost So Much?’ appeared in the Beaver Country Times, discussing inflation and the future. The writer suggested that a $50,000 home in 1979 would cost $3.2 million in 2011, while a $5000 car would cost $320,000. While this sounds far-fetched, the writer does correct his math and predicts that such a car could cost $40,000 in 2011, and that is not an unheard of figure today. It went on to hint at a depression in the 1980′s, which also did not happen. … Read entire article »

UN Bad Prediction in 1976

According to a NY Times article dated March 5, 1976, the UN predicted that the global population in 2010 would be nearly 8 billion. They based it on 1974 data, using a 1.9% growth rate. At the end of 2010, however, the world population stands at about 6.8 billion. … Read entire article »

Twitter’s Christmas Overload

Twitter is running slowly or not at all today as apparently the Christmas holiday brings out the tweet in all of us. I’ve been met with an outdated timeline or an “over capacity” graphic (see below) throughout the day. … Read entire article »

New Facebook Pages Features, Take 3

As expected, and after the disastrous attempt at rolling out updates to Facebook pages, we’re quietly seeing those features trickle in. Today I noticed two new features in page management. First, clicking the “Account” drop-down, now offers a “Manage Pages” option, which will bring up a window showing you all the pages you admin. During the failed rollout, this was called “Switch Accounts” which apparently Facebook decided was misleading. The other feature I noticed today was how the insights are shown for all pages. I’m not sure this is the look Facebook had in mind, and I’m guessing it will be changed. The small page icon looks so lonely, and it seems like there is a lot of empty space on the screen. What appears to be missing today (12/23/10) is the option to … Read entire article »

Skype Outage – 12/22/10

Skype is apparently experiencing a widespread outage this morning. Calls are being sent straight to voicemail, and the “call” button is grayed out for skype-to-skype and skype-to-phone calls. … Read entire article »

Black Swan and Natalie Portman’s Teeth

So I went to see Black Swan the other night, a movie Roger Ebert claims is the third best movie of 2010 (how any movie could be better than “Inception” is beyond me). My companion for the movie was a movie buff, schooled in film, and dizzyingly accurate in her interpretations of them. … Read entire article »

Facebook Update, Take 2?

It seems as though Facebook might be trying to implement those updates that crashed their site yesterday. Currently, home pages are showing up blank, buttons aren’t working, and other little hints that something is going on over there. Hard to say why they don’t just wait until the middle of the night when the traffic is at its lowest peak, but maybe the FB gods need their weekend time, too. Worthy of noting is that when you view a friend’s profile, the “send message” and “poke” buttons at the top right are new. It could mean that they are going to slowly roll out all of the new features instead of all at once like yesterday. As of 12:33pm PT, the site seems to be giving random errors, the same way the … Read entire article »

Facebook New Page Features and Big Crash

While updating a Facebook page today – literally AS I was working on it – the page started to change before my eyes. And this was all just labor pains as the social media goliath tumbled into a widespread outage today. I was adding a second store hours to the “Additional Info” field – and that field disappeared when I tried to save. Twitter immediately lit up with people wondering what was going on. With Facebook now accounting for as much as 10% of ALL internet activity, an outage is a big deal. And for those of us who do business on Facebook, it can be nailbiting waiting for its return. Prior to the blackout, I did notice some new features. Some I liked, and some I didn’t. These were mostly focused … Read entire article »
