Netgear Router Dropping Connection? Try this.
I recently purchased a new Netgear N300 (WNR2000v3) wireless router from a local Best Buy store. It seemed to work fine at first, but I started noticing connection issues shortly thereafter. I was getting disconnected anywhere from once a day to several times an hour. Read on to find out how I fixed the problem.
UPDATED 5/28/2012: The fix I originally wrote about only worked briefly. Read below for the eventual fix that worked. There are also several commenters who have provided additional solutions.
I should first mention that after playing around with the router, I took it back to Best Buy to explain the problem to them. They merely told me to exchange it for a new one, which I did. Only a couple of hours after installing the new one, I found myself disconnected yet again. The router’s exterior display showed no issues, but all of the devices in my network were offline. The only way I could seem to get back online was to unplug it and plug it back in.
Realizing that it was more than a coincidence that two N300 routers would have identical connection issues, I decided to hit up Google and see what I could find. As it turns out, the firmware pre-loaded onto the router was spotty. My router’s firmware version was V1.1.1.58. When I Googled that exact firmware version, it was immediately apparent that this version was the culprit. I updated to V1.1.1.72 and the connection issue disappeared. For a while. Eventually I had to downgrade the firmware to a version earlier than the version pre-installed on the router.
Fortunately, downgrading the firmware is a breeze.

This is where you can check your Netgear router’s firmware version. V1.1.1.58 may be causing issues.
Go into the router’s management by pointing your web browesr to routerlogin.net. By the way, if you can’t access it (which happened to me), you may need to restart your router first. The screen you see after logging in will show your router version at the top right. You will probably have 1.1.1.58. That won’t work. Neither will the version it wants you to install, which is 1.1.1.72.
Best Buy had lots of boxes of Netgear N300 routers – perhaps more than any other at my local store. It would be a safe assumption that all of those are preinstalled with the faulty V1.1.1.58 firmware, and everyone purchasing those routers could potentially have this problem.
To downgrade your Netgear firmware, go here. Click on the “Downloads” tab and check the “Show all version” box. This will reveal the original firmware version WNR2000v3 Initial Release Firmware Version 1.0.1.26 which is what you want to install.
Click the link and download the software. They recommend updating over a wired connection, which I did.
Log in to routerlogin.net and go into the “Advanced” tab. You’ll find an option to upgrade firmware (even though we’re technically downgrading). You will be prompted to navigate to the .26 version you just downloaded. At this point, the installation is automatic, and you should have the original .26 version installed.
One final step – do not ignore this part! You will be prompted to restart your router only if there is an error. Because I had no error, I didn’t restart my router – and found myself disconnecting again. I pushed the button on the back of the router to power it on and then power it off… and my disconnecting issue disappeared. I’m not sure why that final step is necessary, but it seemed to make a difference for me.
Let us know if this worked for you, or if you had any other problems with this router.

I recently installed a Netgear JNR 3000 router and am so fed up with the constant drop in connectivity, even though the wifi signal on all my devices is nice and strong. My Router page does not have the above mentioned option to uncheck. Will be really grateful for any help and ideas. Netgear Support hasnt been able to do much at all.
Thanks!!
Been having this disconnect problem for a few weeks after almost two years without a problem and have been searching the web for some help but, “no joy” until I found your post… loaded the .26 version and stayed up and running for a record 18.3 hrs before the dreaded break. disabled the pin this morning to see what happens, hopefully the big fix, but if not, the version change has increased the usability of my machine 300%… Thanks much. I will re post if we have success. Thanks again, Rock Out.
Thanks for the comment, and good luck. Let us know how things go with the pin change.
Back from lunch and found the system off line again. unchecked the pin box… will be checking back to see if something else might do the trick. Rock Out.
I read the suggestion above for getting my Netgear router downgraded. I spent about an hour on the phone with one of the tech support guys from Netgear. With his help, I got it successfully downgraded. Since then (a few weeks ago), no more problems. Thanks for the info.
thank you so much! i thought i was going crazy because i couldn’t figure out why it kept dropping the connection. your instructions were perfect…i was able to get everything up and going again!
thank you!
Glad we could help!
I’ve been having similar connection problems, recently. The router worked fine for some time and over the last two weeks it has been a disaster. I was testing it with my laptop. I could connect once, then if I force it offline and try to connect again, it doesn’t complete the connection. I look on the router and it shows the MAC address of my laptop, but it doesn’t give it an IP Address. My laptop shows it’s connected, but has no Internet access. If I power off/on, it lets me connect ONCE. My two printers are even more interesting. My computer says that the printer is ready, so I print something to it. BUT, it gets routed to my other printer, which the router doesn’t even show in its connected devices and proceeds to throw out multiple pages with interesting graphics! It seems to be getting worse as the days progress. It is so puzzling how the problem can be progressively worse with such strange behavior. At present, I have been constantly restarting it so I can connect. Both the wireless and hard-wire connects have problems. Also, I was having huge problems with reliable Internet. So, I completely disconnected the router from the problem. I went directly to the modem. “ping yahoo.com” was showing many, many timeouts and unreachable errors. I ran ping overnight and it never got better. I have a dual boot system, so I booted the other operating system and the Internet problems went away. That was puzzling. Then I thought about what was different between them. The difference was Netgear Genie was only installed on the problem operating system. So, I rebooted and uninstalled Neatgear Genie. Boom, no more Internet issues. So nice of them to distribute an app that acts like a virus. Hopefully, your router solution works for me. I’ll try it tonight. I don’t plan on EVER buying Netgear, again, though.
More… I just read on Netgear’s website ( http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/21865 ) that people are having problems with iOS 6 devices. Interesting… I have three iPhones that connect to the wireless. I just got the other two a week ago. Funny thing is though, they connect more reliably than my laptops and printers.
Waffle,
much thanks for the fix. It was driving me nuts but your fix really did the trick!
Our pleasure!
I just completed this downgrade, while on the phone with Netgear Tech support. I explained that they need to get this info to the Firmware designers. 3 weeks ago I had tried to move from 1.58 to their newer 2.1 and after 4-5 days of great service – went right back to dropping several times per hour.
ONE additional change that the Tech had me do though was based on fact that one of my wifi products is an XBox360. After updated to v.26, he had me go into Advanced- WAN Setting- MTU and change it from 1500 to 1364 which is supposed to be the recommended XBox setting. Will see if this makes a difference.
Thanks for the additional info. Hopefully you’re back online for good!
Hey, bought a netgear router like 3days ago and its exactly the same problem. i tried to go to routerlogin.net but it asks for a username and a password. Now i know what the Password(wep key) is but what is the username? could you please help me finiding the user name.
I believe the default user name is admin. Remember that the password to access the router in order to get on the internet is not the same as the password to access the router admin at routerlogin.net.
i thought they were the same passwords. i dont have the other one. i tried the default username admin with the password admin but it doesnt work. and i tried it with the password i use to access the internet and it doesnt work either.
Try admin and leave the password blank.
The password is password. But to make sure its on the back of the router
i find this interesting. i have the same router and its been rock solid stable since day one. i just upgraded to the latest 1.1.2.6 firmware and i actually noticed a wireless LAN bandwidth increase, and a couple of my clients are only 54g, maybe 4 are 300n, and there is one box that’s wired. still I’m getting excellent wifi speeds with the netgear.
one thing you might check is that you are running in both 20 and 40 mhz modes simultaneously. this feature should be left on.
are you guys sure the router is the problem? I’d definitely be checking the internet connection for problems too
I got the same results. I am now happy with the router.
shoot me an email and i can try to help u guys as im having very good luck with my routers config
I just upgraded firmware, however I have had the same problems. Would you please tell me your settings. Thanks!
Even after downgrading the firmware per your instructions my router continued to disconnect. I’m at a loss and don’t know where else to turn. This is maddening!
Take a look through the rest of the comments here (if you haven’t already). There are some other solutions mentioned there, too.
We bought this router 2 weeks ago and have the same wifi and LAN connections going down problem for no reason. I am an expert at routers as I am also an electrical engineer. Never seen this problem before on other routers. There was a recommended solution on the internet to set the router to turn off the wifi and then back on 30 min later (this is an automatic setting in the router. 30 min is the smallest amount of time settable). We implemented this yesterday and have it set to do this at 3am. Will know if this works in a few days. Downgrading to an earlier firmware version is not wise as newer versions may have fixed security issues or other serious problems. We are at ver 1.1.2.6
We plan on never to buying a Netgear product again.
You do make a good point about newer versions fixing security holes, so the downgrade is definitely the lesser of two evils. We have had 8 straight months of the router working flawlessly ever since the downgrade. Netgear should have been all over this problem and it doesn’t look like they have even addressed it yet.
This is Aub again with an update. All attempted solutions have failed. We are returning the router for a refund.
I’ll add my $0.02 here also. I have been a layal Netgear customer for over a decade now. Never had any problems until I recomended an N300 router to a client.
It has rock solid wired connectivity by the wireless drops all the time, despite 90% signal strength.
Yesterday I upgraded the firmware (not sure what version) and that resolved a problem where iPads couldn’t talk on the internet despite having a solid connection. The firmware upgrade fixed that, but hasn’t helped wireless reliability.
It really pisses me off when companies QA fails so misserably and they won’t resolve such problems.
Ok, so I have a WNDR3400v2 Router at work that sits behind an ATT Uverse NVG510. I am randomly lossing connection to the WNDR3400v2. Every 15-20 minutes or so, the router stops responding. No internet, unable to ping to it, although I am able to ping another router THROUGH the offending router (PC directly connected to wndr3400v2).
It cant be the router itself as I just replaced it last night with an exact replica, loaded with the exact same settings. It was working great for the last few weeks at least.
Current setup between NVG510 and WNDR is
NVG510 – IPPassthrough (Closest thing to bridge mode for this piece of ATT garbage)
This assigns the WAN IP address from the DSL connection to the WAN port of the WNDR3400 via MAC.
Again, when it acts up, I cannot ping its LAN port, or the NVG510/the interwebs, but I can ping another router going through the offending router.
You ROCK!
Talk about frustrating!
I attempted to downgrade the firmware to the initial release, but the file on the Netgear server is corrupt. I tried downloading it several times and even found another place on their site to download a non-zipped .img file. It too was corupt (the router said so).
So I gave up and downloaded the next tothe oldest, I believe it’s version 1.0.1.58 if I’m not mistaken. Anyway, now my connections are quite reliable, at least they have been for 5 hours now. Plus my bandwidth is 99% as good as a wired connection.
I just hope that this fix is permanent. I’m extremely displeased with Netgear at this point, and will not buy from them again unless there’s no other choice.
Thanks for the comment. Hopefully your fix holds this time. And we agree that Netgear should be well aware of this problem 8 months after we discovered it.
I recently picked up an N300 WNR2000v2 at an estate sale for $10.00. I have experienced intermittent dropped connections despite having the latest firmware (V1.2.0.4_35.0.57NA).
I have another Netgear router I got for free (WGR614v7 running firmware V2.0.29_2.0.29NA). This router has a tendency to bog down and eventually freeze every 3 or 4 weeks. A reboot brings it back to life. I will never buy a Netgear product and I won’t even accept a free one!
I will try some of the recommendations above and if anything works, I will post my results. More than likely, I will pitch these routers in the dust bin and wish them good riddance!
- DB
Good luck! Downgrading the firmware has still been the solution that worked here, and we did it 9 months ago.
Hey, i’m gonna try to downgrade, as my wifi box is always dc from my modem. this sight has given me relief as i am not alone with this annoying problem.
not sure what my username and password is for the site but :O
ty.
OK strange news here. found out my wifi box was already on the 1st version!
So im going to try and get the latest one, instead of the 1st one
I’ve been having major problems with this netgear router as well, lose connection, slow speed, when I ping I get a terrible speed 1042ms? I reboot the router and get better for awhile but never what I used to get when I was hooked directly to the modem.
I did what was suggested to downgrade and disable the pin, the connection was better but the ping was terrible, 1832ms avg? I enabled the router’s pin and the ping was 1029ms avg. I used to get 42ms when I was hooked directly to the modem, I’m pretty sure with an old linksys router we used to get better pings as well but I no longer have it otherwise I would set it up.
Anyone have any suggestions to get a better speed out of this router? Thanks
I downloaded the new old firmware verison, but it keeps wanting to burn it to a disk before it installs. Did I do something wrong?
I purchased the Netgear N300 WNR2000 in August 2012. It was dropping the signal every day, and had to be rebooted. Then, about a month ago, it seemed to have corrected itself for my desktop PC, but had to be rebooted daily for all other devices (laptop, printer, Roku). Two weeks ago, it simply stopped working for the other devices, but is working fine for my desktop PC. All the devices are within 10 feet of the router, and the signal is strong. I’ve rebooted, unplugged, etc., but nothing will get it to recognize everything else. There have been no changes to any of the devices, including my PC, so what’s up with this? I’m ready to reset to factory settings and reinstall everything, but I’m afraid I may lose the only Internet connection I still have. Any help would be greatly appreciated, for I’m NOT a computer expert! Thank you!
I can’t seem to login into routerlogin.net. I tried the admin as the username but no luck. Is there a way that I can find the correct password to use?
I’ve been getting dropped by this router since we bought it almost 2 years ago. My wife’s laptop, her kindle, and our phones never have connection issues with it. It’s only my laptop but it works just fine at my office and never drops. This has been very frustrating.
I was able to login using admin as the username and password as the password. I’m now having the difficulty trying to downgrade it. It keeps saying that it needs to be a *.chk file so I renamed the .img file I downloaded as a .chk and it starts to load and fails after a few seconds. Tried it a few times now. Any suggestions?
We recently upgraded our refurbed wnr2000v3 to the latest firmware version v1.1.2.6 and had nothing but trouble with dropped internet connections. My wifi analyser would see the main and guest signal drop away every 2-3 minutes only to return 15-30 seconds later. We used your method to downgrade to v1.1.2.2 and the connection is now rock solid. Thank you so much – I hope you have a really great day!
You ROCK! Thank you so much – this was driving me crazy. The Netgear site won’t admit there is a problem either. Arrrrrrgggghhhh. I should have done a Google search earlier. You have restored my faith in human beings!
We’re glad we could help. It was definitely frustrating here, too!
So what is the most rock solid version I should be running? This is drving me nuts. It just loses internet for no apparent reason and rebooting fixes it every time
We’ve been using version 1.0.1.26 since last May without issue.
Would this work for a Netgear Versalink 7500? I’ve been having the same problems for 2-3 years and I’m sick of it. I tried looking for a firmware for my particular device but the product is no longer made and no firmware could be found (go figure). I just wanted to know if this firmware could work for me
I recently upgraded the router to version 1.1.2.6 after issues started popping up with the downgrade. Seems they fixed the problem, and the router now flys.
I’m having issues downgrading from 1.1.2.6. I get this error ” This firmware file is incorrect! Please get the firmware file again and make sure it is the correct firmware for this product.” Is there any way to get around this?
For some reason my router prompted me to upgrade to 1.1.2.6 a few weeks ago and shortly thereafter I started having connectivity issues with all of my devices, including my unsupported whole-home DirecTV service. Every day my non-DVR TV’s have lost signal to the network in addition to my iPhone, iPad, laptop, and occasionally my desktop that is hardwired. It was an easy fix by power-cycling the router, but I shouldn’t have to do that every few hours and it’s the last thing I want to do while watching TV in bed. I just downgraded to my previous version, 1.1.2.2 (I think) so hopefully that will do the trick.
HELLO
this here is for those who wrote about netgear being so bad… lol, lmao… like any thing in the world u get what u pay for!!!! netgear has been one of the most user friendly routers. alone with beig on of the best made…. like any thing in the tech world, the parts that put together each pc/mac.network/cable mondems/ routers ect… (the list goes on). yet the list of co. where these kinds of parts are no where nere as big. there is very few co. that make parts for the tech world.. lets say u have a linksys router and i have my netegar router. guess what plp? yuppers thats right the only diffence between the two is the name, and the softwarenot that runs the same parts… its best befor u go trash talking any co. it is best u get the facts of where their parts are from…… netgear happens to be one of the top leading co. in the networking world.. yet hey each to their own.. lol i love plp dont get me wrong.. i get a kick out of the lack of facts plp have while typing away some crap about something they know so little about…. yes the downgrading is the wrost thing u can do.. yet it can and it has fixed troubles Configuring do to corrupt files. remove old updates than upgrade is the way to do this… if the router keeps droping u have troubles with whom ever u get your net sev. from…. or the router u are using has reached it lifes end.. oh by the way all things we buy have a end life.. its how they get u to come back n buy more… MORE plp buy buy buy buy…. new new new bigger bigger bigger better better lmao.. lets see i have about 50 net gears router here in my shop. not a one of them has given me a bit of any kinds of troubles… well ok not one i cant fix that is lol… it pays to read, know and understand what it is you are realing long before pluging it in… giggles oh yes true too that after every update a restart is daaaaa a no brainer there… oh i crack myself up…. lol well plp this been fun here…. keep on reading learning n doing…. PEACE
It’s very apparent that there is an issue for many people with the firmware pre-loaded on this particular router. Fortunately you don’t seem to have had this issue.
It’s funny when someone tries to trash talk a group of people when they can’t even form a correct sentence or spell and type properly.
Hello, i have been going crazy with this router since i bought it a year ago!!! I ungraded this router from a linksys wrt54g. (Best router i have ever had!!! Worked flawless for years!!!! Unfortunately with increasing technology you always have to upgrade. I picked this up after good reviews for about 70 bucks. When i get home and installed it i was blown away, the speed was great and while the range sucked, party because i have such a huge apt, i was quite please. Now me being the nerd of the house, my roommates would complain about dropped signals. Especially my roommate at the end of the apt. I told him that its because he is so far away that the signal weakens and he would just have to come to the living room. It was messed up but hey, he wanted the bigger room. Anywhoo…i always get the Genie: Internet Disconnect….Internet Connect message, but it was so fast, my streaming would drop for a couple of seconds. No bother. But last week, i was in the living room on my ps3!! My ps3 is Ethernet wired to the router. So here i am playing some youtube video and the 4 minute video kept freezing. It would happen at least 2-3 times every video. I called net-gear of course cursing up a storm and of course since the router is out of warranty there is only so much they can do. So im going to try your solution. I hope it works. If not i will have to fork over some more money for another linksys. Lord help us all!!
So i just got home and realize i have version WNRDR3400v2. Which makes this useless for me. Back to the drawing board
I just installed a WNR2000v3 in my mother-in-law’s house. Firmware version: V1.1.1.58
Not exactly sure what you mean by “connection issues”. For me, there’s no problem with the wireless connection to the router. The problem is that every so often (usually very few minutes) the connection to the internet drops (even though the connection to the router is fine). I connected a laptop directly to the device providing an internet connection (in my case, a Ubiquiti Nanostation M5, rather than a cable modem) and didn’t see this, so it’s definitely the router.
Will try the firmware upgrade/downgrade; I’ll start with an upgrade.
BTW, what are commenters referring to by “disabling the pin”?
Hi there. I asked this before but how would I go about downgrading if it tells me that I can’t downgrade due to it having the latest version already?
I haven’t seen that. At what point during the process did you see this message?
When I select the file and attempt to upload it. It starts trying to upload and then stops and tells me that it can’t ‘update’ because I’m trying to use an outdated version to update.
I installed wnr2000v3 router and got numerous wireless disconnects per hour. Genie advised a firmware update to V1.1.2.6. Tech support advised against the firmware upgrade and we chased a lot of wild gooses. Fed up, I took N300 back to Best Buy and exchanged it for a new one. Same nonsense! With nothing to loose, I let Genie take care of upgrading the firmware to V1.1.2.6 and SUCCESS! Rock solid connection for 24 hours so far. Hooray!
I must wonder why some have success with V1.1.2.6 and others have failure. I am in mode up to 150 Mbps which is default on a new box and for me it is fast enough since I have cheap and slow DSL. What if the software in different revs is messed up at different modes? Or maybe they change it and don’t change the rev? Maybe Genie does a good or bad job at random?
I have had this problem for a few weeks and just happened upon this website. I also just bought a netgear AP since signal didnt reach other side of the house. I thought that is what caused my problem. I’ll give the downgrade a try.
originally I thought it was the netgear parental controls possibly causing the issue. Does anyone else use the netgear parental controls that are available with this router? It’s very good and the only reason I stick with netgear.
Oh and HANK doesn’t know what he is talking about. Obviously, you can use the same parts and still have different problems for any number of reasons. especially if the problem is with the firmware.
On the same topic, I have a Notebook PC. I heard that the Norton firewall installed on my PC could cause problems with the NetGear router, including disconnects.
I have DGN2200 and recently have been getting very slow speeds. I am on rural exchange with old wires. 6MB is fast for me but at times I get less than 1MB. In past few days connection has been dropping off completely. Rebooting router does sometimes reconnect back to good speed. Maybe I should purchase a different brand router?
Hi all, I have had this problem for a while (18 months) and like others, I exchanged the router only to find the problem was still there. I have had a certain amount of success by just disabling the PIN on the router which has fixed the problem temporarily (for anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks) but ultimately I have had to reset the router when the problem reoccurred.
I have just checked my router firmware (V1.0.0.20_4.0.20). This is the default version installed.
I have not tried to upgrade the firmware yet as I the problem I have identified appears to be with the router re-enabling the PIN. On investigation I found that I could still connect to router directly even when the wireless was down. I soon noticed that every time the router has this problem the PIN had mysteriously been re-enabled.
Another strange feature is that while this problem seems to affect iPhones, printers, my AppleTV and windows PCs it does not stop my Linux system from connecting?
Sorry I have no other advice but maybe this info will help someone. If I decide to try a firmware update ill post back and let you guys know how it went.
Hi, I had 2 wireless intruders. One identified as Blaze and properties showed Manufacturer: TexasInstruments, Model: TI_Connectivity_mobile, ModelNumber: wl12xx, MAC address: e0:cb:1d:7b:db:13.
The other identified as occam and properties showed Manufacturer: LGE, Model: Nexus 4, MAC address: 10:68:3f:45:53:bc. When occam was on, somehow my region was Africa (It went back to North America later). When Blaze was on I was terrified because my disk was going 99% activity for 30 minutes. I now think the disk activity was coincidental with a Microsploft Click-to-Run Update for Excel because it was set to update automatically and the latest update is installed. Now I set it not to aut0matically update.
Nevertheless I’ve had enough of nail biting over invaders, so I made some tweaks and so far no invaders (knock-on-wood).
1 – change admin password
2 – change SSID and PassPhrase
3 – turn Broadcast Name off
4 – turn off UPnP (so less clutter on the log)
5 – turn Access Control on for Wireless Card AccessList for my devices MAC addresses
Note: When changed passwords and SSID, I had to go around to each connected device one time and wrestle with it to establish connection in the new situation.
If I see another intrusion or an unexpected high resource usage, I’ll go back to cat 5 cables — til I learn more about securing a wireless router.
Hi, hope you guys can help me out as well. I bought a Netgear Router DDN2200Mv2 a month a ago and sitting with the same problem it keeps dropping connection. which firmware version will be best for me to use to solve my problem? existing running on V1.0.0.31_1.0.31. Thanks guys
In my case, it was trial and error. I tried different firmware until I found the one that worked.
Same issue as everyone else. Went through the steps, downgraded, everything. After all the irritating tech support calls and frustrating, futile attempts, I STILL have the same issue. Random ping spikes, internet loss completely. My conclusion? This product is a piece of shit. Not going to deal with this thing anymore, headed to officemax in the morning to UPGRADE. Seriously, I have to manually DOWNGRADE this thing for a chance a solid internet? What a piece of shit.
Cannot say enough thanks for your post here!! I upgraded my old Netgear router in December to a new WNDR3700v3. We were hoping for better connection speed and had been very happy with our previous router, so why not stay with a brand that worked, right? Since December, the new router has been working great, but, about 5 days ago we kept dropping connection about every 10 minutes. We’d get kicked offline, but then in a minute or two we’d be back up and running – for 10 minutes or so – until the connection was dropped again. Since I’m over 90 days old on my purchase, I was trying to use Netgear’s e-mail support for free to absolutely no avail. The suggestions Netgear offered did nothing. So I have been reading lots of complaints online and other people’s trials and solutions (or at least trying to) in order to find a fix. I’m a novice and I don’t understand a lot of the computer lingo, so I have been hoping to find a ‘simple’ fix. I found your post, and I managed to adapt it to fit my needs. I downgraded my firmware from the current 1.0.0.22 version to the 1.0.0.18 version. So far, so good! I’ve been online now for the last 1/2 hour without losing connection! My kids can now watch Netfilx, uninterrupted, and my husband can do his work without having to pull his hair out from losing connection constantly. So, again, THANK YOU!
We are just glad we were able to help! Thanks for your comment.
You can download the manual here: Netgear n300 manual
