Is Claire’s Selling Emo Scars?
A photo is circulating the internet, purporting to show an advertisement for young women’s accessory retailer Claire’s selling “Emo Scars” which would allow young women to look as if they are cutting themselves via press-on scars. But is this image real?
It’s a hoax, and we’ll tell you why.
Grammar
If you ignore the photo (below) and look at the text in the fake ad, it contains basic grammar errors, such as “simply wet and lay on you arm,” along with sentences lacking capitalization.
Logo
The logo for Claire’s in the fake ad is an older Claire’s logo, and doesn’t quite match the original. If you look at the comparison of the logo in the ad with the real logo, you’ll find that the circled “a” is considerably different in the fake ad. The circled “a” in the original Claire’s logo is thicker and the top of the letter protrudes upward far more than in the fake.
Product
A search of the Claire’s website will yield no results when searching for emo scars. There is no evidence they sell anything even close to this type of product.
It’s a hoax.
Below is the fake ad that has been circulating.
The quality of this ad is far below anything Claire's would publish.
The text reads:

Notice that there is a lack of capitalization for many of the sentences in the ad. Obviously a business as prominent as Claire’s would have proper grammar and capitalization in any ad. It’s also safe to say they’d never sell anything like this.
Let’s take a look at the logo itself, compared to the original Claire’s logo. Notice the particular difference in the letter “a” in each:

I am more then pissed the fuck off !!! My 12 year old daughter cuts her self & thankfully noticed & she is being treated . But I came home from work & she showed this ad to me & the anger that came over me! well I can say I will find out if this is real . I will find a way to do something about this…I dont find this funny or cool what so ever. There are kids out there that do this to themselves & trust me its not because they want to look cool.

I have been working at Claire’s for two years now, and can safely say this is a hoax. A terrible hoax about something that shouldnt be laughed at. But Claire’s has nothing to do with it and is currently trying to sort the situation out.
I’m so glad this is fake,its vile,no being depressed is a horrible feeling and to be fair its NOT cool and you’re just taking the mick out of some people so whoever made this should be ashamed.

the cutting thing will never go away. it will remain as long as bullies remain..and this wouldn’t be an alternative for those who cut, and i would know, because it wouldn’t apply the same feeling for cutting yourself, and wouldn’t give the same relief. but yes, everybody wants people to stop cutting.

I contacted Claire’s Corporate (easy number it’s just 1-800-CLAIRES) and they assured me that it’s a fake photo manipulation. Claire’s hasn’t used that logo design in the packaging for YEARS. And honestly, just common since made me realize this was a bad Photoshop job.

Cutting should not be something people want do because they want to be popular. Its mot a trend ots a way of life, its very depressing to be emo and people faking it just dont understand. That doesnt mean try it but dont do this for attention, real emo people dont do this for attention, they do it because it is their only way to feel alive. well i know alot of people that was offended by this. but yea i am a so called “emo” i preffe the therm “alternative” but yea just be course you’re an “Emo” you dont have to be cutting. alot of “non-emo” teenagers are cutting, and i know how it feels standing in the moment. but but but… with all the respect to the people that are having so bad lives they feel the urge to cut, i would buy this and freak the fuck out of my friends though.

I am a self harmer and I know this isn’t true but the last time I went to Claire’s I had gained enough courage to not wear bracelets or long sleeves but when I was buying some stuff the person at the checkout was snickering with her co worker and when I was walking away I could hear them saying quite loudly infact “did you see her arms” and then laughed.
