Steven Tyler Quits American Idol

In the midst of speculation that Jennifer Lopez might leave American Idol, rocker Steven Tyler announced today that he is stepping down as a judge on the popular show. He issued a statement in which he said he wanted to focus more on being the singer for Aerosmith rather than a judge on a television show.

Tyler’s complete statement reads:

After some long…hard…thoughts… I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit. I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back – but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I’ve got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band. The next few years are going to be dedicated to kicking some serious ass – the ultimate in auditory takeover.

On Nov. 6, we are unleashing our new album, Music from Another Dimension on the Earth, Moon, Mars, and way beyond the stars.

Idol was over-the-top fun, and I loved every minute of it. Now it’s time to bring Rock Back. ERMAHGERD.

Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Programming at Fox issued a statement wishing Tyler well:

“It’s been a tremendous honor to have Steven – one of the most prolific artists in the world – on American Idol for the past two seasons,” he said.

It has been 8 years since the last Aerosmith album was released, and the current album has been in the works since the middle of 2011.

Tyler’s debut on American Idol came on the 10th season’s premiere on January 19, 2011. His final appearance on the show came on May 23, 2012, in the finale of the 11th season. On that appearance he also debuted the newest Aerosmith single, “Legendary Child.” Tyler served as judge for 2 seasons, known for flirting with female contestants, letting out his trademark screech on nearly every episode, and his generous use of the word “beautiful” to describe favorable performances.
