Is the “Penis Snake” Real or a Hoax?
News that a so-called “Penis Snake” was discovered in Brazil has rightly been met with some skepticism. The snake, as shown in photos circulated on the internet, does in fact resemble the human male genitalia. But is this real or just a hoax?
The snake is real.
This bizarre looking “snake” isn’t a snake at all, but actually a snake-like amphibian with the scientific name of Atretochoana eiselti. It was discovered after engineers drained a hydroelectric dam which spans a river connected to the Amazon. Scientists knew of the species from an older specimen held in a Vienna museum, but it wasn’t until the discovery of live specimens that the creature came into prominence.
Aside from its resemblance to a human male’s member, the “penis snake” is also blind and lacks lungs, forcing scientists to speculate that they may breathe through their skin.
The term “penis snake” is merely a nickname, and it isn’t the first snake-like creature to be called by this name. It should also be noted the resemblance to a penis appears to vary from photo to photo, and some who have seen them in person refer to them as a “floppy snake” instead.
What nickname would you use for this creature?

What should they name the penis snake? http://ow.ly/cQb6p
I’ve heard of the “bed snake” which is actually another name for the penis. Wouldn’t want that creepy looking thing in my bed though. Think I’ll stick with the bed snake!
There’s more to the story that the writer is missing. It’s not a actually a snake. It’s an amphibian.
Thank you for pointing this out. We have updated the text above to be clearer about this.
To be honest, to me it still looks like a floppy penis, so penis snake is quite appropriate
Or Pure Alabama Black Snake. I know you laughed. It’s okay.
It spits white venom
Its a caecilian
