Actor Morgan Freeman has joined the ranks of Eddie Murphy, Bill Nye, and Robin Williams as the latest celebrity death hoax. The actor who played God and many other notable roles in his illustrious career is alive and well.
This rumor persists, nearly two months after the first wave. The latest incarnation includes the following text:
At about 5 p.m. on Thursday, our beloved actor Morgan Freeman passed away due to a artery rupture. Morgan was born on June 1, 1937. He will be missed by not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page.
Now back to the original September 8th post:
Whereas many of the recent celebrity death hoaxes originiated from the same fake news website, Freeman’s death hoax appears to have been proliferated by a Facebook page entitled “R.I.P. Morgan Freeman” which as of this writing has nearly 70,000 followers. The page was created on Wednesday, September 5, and the rumor began to surge the next day. Ironically, the page itself offers the description: “He’s still alive and well, stop believing what you see on the internet.” This implies that the hoax may have been created to make a point. As this writer well knows, many readers don’t bother with such “small” details, which is why people continue to leave condolences on the page, despite the fact that it is a self-proclaimed hoax.
