Congressman on Science Committee Claims Earth is 9000 Years Old: Hoax or Rumor?
Twitter lit up today with claims that a Georgia Congressman who sits on the House Science Committee believes the earth is only 9000 years old. Is there any truth to this or is it merely a hoax or smear campaign?
It’s true.
A popular tweet circulating today stated:
Congressman Broun (R-GA) believes Earth is 9,000 years old, evolution’s a hoax, and SERVES ON HOUSE SCIENCE COMMITTEE.
The tweet above linked to an article by Talking Points Memo. In the article we read excerpts from a video in which Republican Congressman Paul Brown (R- Georgia) is quoted as stating that evolution and other scientific theories are “lies straight from the pit of hell.”
A video of the Congressman’s words shows that he does in fact make such claims. Below is a transcript of an excerpt of the video, followed by the video excerpt itself. The remarks were made at the 2012 Sportsman’s Banquet, Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Georgia.
God’s word is true. I’ve come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution, and embryology, and Big Bang Theory. All that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior. You see there are a lot of scientific data that I’ve found out as a scientist that actually show this is really a young earth. I don’t believe that earth is but about 9000 years old. I believe it was created in 6 days as we know them. That’s what the Bible says. And what I’ve come to learn is that it’s the manufacturers’s handbook, is what I call it. It teaches us how to run our lives individually. How to run our families. How to run our churches. But it teaches us how to run all of public policy and everything in society. That’s the reason as your Congressman I hold the Holy Bible as being the major directions to me of how I’ll vote in Washington D.C. and I’ll continue to do that.
Congressman Broun is in fact listed on the House Science Committee for the 112th Congress (as of this writing). It will be interesting to see if Congressman Broun is able to produce the scientific data that bolsters him claims of a young earth.
The full speech can be seen here.
What are your thoughts on Congressman Paul Broun’s statements above?

guts!!!! its true just not enough people brave enough to say so
Looks like we should forget about fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. They have arrived in the USA and are on the science committee in the House of Representatives!
Very scary.
I like the pictures of the congressman better when he wears his tin foil hat.
There’s a petition for him to leave, hopefully he does.
What a dumbass.
Scientists will have to re-visit their estimate that 2.5% of our genome is from the Neanderthals – appears to me that there are isolated parts of our country where it is near 100% Maybe the Smithsonian could add a new exhibit entitled “Congressional Neanderthals”
Hah hah that’s such a great point!
