Telemarketer
While we can’t seem to verify the exact product being sold, you can rest assured that this is nothing more than an annoying telemarketer attempting to make their quota by bothering you. Different sources have cited different flavors of spam here, so we can’t confirm yet what they are selling. Most likely it is the dreaded free cruise giveaway, a debt consolidation promotion, or possibly a home security system. Since all of these are well-known, ubiquitous telemarketing spam, it doesn’t really matter which one they’re pushing does it?
The biggest red flag is that when you attempt to call the number back, you won’t get through. I have gotten a busy and a “no ...

So you received a call saying you’ve won a free cruise, or that you’ll earn a free cruise by answering some survey questions? Sounds too good to be true, right? We’ve already written extensively about specific phone numbers that have been calling with such offers over the past six months, but we thought it was time to discuss the scam in general, and provide a master list of numbers we’ve tracked so far about the scam.
You may be asking, if they give away a free cruise, maybe it’s worth answering the survey, right? The problem is, it isn’t really free, and in some cases there’s not really a prize at all. Yep – they get your survey answers, and you get a runaround that doesn’t always include a cruise. In other cases, I’ve heard of a cruise existing, but with hidden fees thrown in that doesn’t quite make it free, ...

Financial Telemarketer
This number is apparently being used by a telemarketer for a variety of products, none of them worth your time. It could be for a “free” cruise, debt management, mortgage, home security, sweepstakes, or any other BS they can dream up. It’s doubtful anyone calling from this number has anything legitimate to say, and typically the call is automated anyway. It’s also usually just a robot calling.
Ignore them people.
By the way, you can’t call them back with your caller ID blocked, or you’ll get the following message with a computer-generated voice:
We’re sorry but we are unable to determine the telephone number you are calling from. Please call back with any call blocking features ...

Survey Telemarketer
This place will call you and tell you via an automated message that you’ve been selected to conduct a survey about the national debt. For your time in taking the survey, you’ll receive a travel-related prize, such as a cruise to the Bahamas. This isn’t the first number we’ve covered about this. In fact, this survey-for-cruise spam is absolutely rampant. In late 2011, they were spamming the country with a string of 503 area code numbers. Now we are seeing this 202 number. There’s a chance this is a different company than those 503 lines, but the result is the same – some bogus cruise for a survey.

I received the following junk mail the other day. I found it to be an interesting twist on the Nigerian 419. This one claims to be from the Department of Homeland Security and states that you have been speaking to imposters in your attempt to collect some money. They claim that all you have to do is fill in some personal information, and they’ll make sure you get your funds, payable in a debit-Visa card. It’s a service provided by them to protect you. Great! Do I even need to state that this is a scam? OK good – you already knew. But here is the full letter for your perusal:

Secretary of US Department of Homeland Security Washington D.C.

Every day is like Christmas when I open up my junk mail folder. Today’s gem proclaims to be from Bank of America, but since it’s obviously fake, I’m calling it “Fake of America” in this article, or FofA. The email I received looks somewhat official, with the BofA logo and everything. There is also a link that seems to imply you’ll be taken to their website when you click it. Don’t believe it! Let’s look a little closer. The email itself states:

He’s telling me that my inheritance of $15,000,000,00 (whatever that is – is it missing a zero or something?) has been delayed. What?
Most people are annoyed by junk email. I find enjoyment from it for some odd reason.
So Zynga – creators of low-end Facebook games such as Farmville, Mafia Wars, and Cafe World – decided to raise capital with their initial stock offering. As reported in an excellent summary as reported on AllThingsD.com, we read,
Currently, Zynga has about 227 million monthly active users who play games for free on Facebook, such as FarmVille, CityVille, Zynga Poker and Mafia Wars. But only a small fraction — around 3 percent — pay for additional features, such as decorative items for a farm or new clothes for an avatar.
It has been reported that Zynga raised $1 billion with 100 million shares at $10 each. But one has to wonder how they managed to trump up a number like 227 million. Perhaps that means 227 users who are active on Facebook have installed one of their games, making them an “active” user? It’s just hard to fathom they can realistically throw ...

I went to a local Fry’s to purchase a relatively inexpensive tablet for a Christmas gift. After looking at all the options and talking to the associate, who seemed to know what he was talking about, I opted to pick up the Sumas 10.1-inch tablet, the PC SMT-102PAD. In fact, I bought two of them as gifts. My girlfriend picked up one for herself. At $179 each, the 10-inch screen and 1ghz processor seemed like a perfect gift for that price range. There wasn’t a demo for that particular model, but the other comparable tablets seemed to be sufficient.
So we walked out of the store with three of these tablets in hand… and wound up back at the store less than 24 hours later returning all three of them. So what were the big issues?
Touch Screen
