This is a problem that hounded me and took me what seemed like forever to figure out. The problem was using SwithMAX 2 and exporting an animation as an animated gif. It would appear to go through the motions during export, but upon viewing the final gif, all I’d see is a blank graphic with a solid color and no animation. I trolled forums, tried re-installing, and always found the same result upon export of an animated gif. Eventually I found an answer, though it wasn’t what I expected.
After purchasing CorelDraw X5, I realized that Swishmax Mini Max 2 was included, so I decided to try opening the graphic I created with Swishmax in Swishmax Minimax to see if the results were different.
They were.
It appears that this is a bug in the software and they aren’t updating Swishmax 2 anymore – so those of us who purchased SwishMax 2 and ...

I waited quite a white to purchase CorelDraw X5, because that’s how I roll. I let the other graphic artists find all the bugs on their watch. Besides, X4 was working perfectly fine for me. So I recently made the plunge during my slow season to pick up X5. My immediate reaction? Two major issues! I’m happy to report that both of those major issues were quite easy to fix. So I’m not rolling along with X5 with no major problems. The first issue I discussed in a separate article was the issue of RGB colors in older files appearing CMYK on the screen. That turned out to be a splendidly easy fix, as you can read here. Notice I said “issue” and not “bug” for that one. But the other issue I would still consider a bug – the CorelDraw X5 crash. After scouring forums for possible solutions, the ...

I recently decided to pull the trigger and upgrade from CorelDraw X4 to X5. One issue that immediately jumped out at me was that of color display. Over 90% of the graphics I produce are for the web, so I don’t need, nor care about, color management, paper type, spot colors, etc. All I wanted were my graphics to look on the screen in X5 the same as they did in X4. But they didn’t. All of my RGB graphics created in X4 had that dull CMYK look in X5.

I messed around with color management settings and scoured forums, but nothing really seemed to work, even the “Simulate CorelDraw X4 Graphics Suite” preset. Eventually I saw one small mention in a forum to try “Simulate Color Management Off” and POW – my colors immediately displayed in vibrant RGB once again.
To clarify, this setting can be found at Tools->Color Management->Default Settings ...

Picasa is the innovative photo organization software now backed by Google which scans your hard drive for photos and automatically detect faces in the photos. When you start identifying the faces, it will start trying suggesting matches. It had moments of complete geek heaven. But it’s not quite perfect yet. Especially when you have an “Unnamed Faces” folder full of what should be obvious matches.

Sometimes it misses a face, especially if that face is at an angle. Other times it seems like the program just needs to re-scan all of those “Unnamed” faces to update with all of the matching you’ve done. After scouring the web for solutions, most people seem resigned to the fact that this feature doesn’t exist. And while they are partially right, there is a way to have the app match more faces.
Go into Tools>Options and select the “Name Tags” tab. The suggestion threshold defaults to ...

I’ve had the privilege of working from home for the past 7 years. My twins, who are nearly 10, have virtually grown up seeing me at my computer with CorelDraw on the screen.
And the older they get, the more technically capable they get every day.
Lately they have both taken more of an interest in my work and in CorelDraw. So I’ve started to let them experiment with the program. My daughter created a colorful image of her name, warped slightly with an envelope. My son created a sports-looking image with a manually-drawn baseball on it.

I am careful not to overwhelm them with tips, and to let them learn much of the program the way kids learn most things: by experimenting. Of course I will throw in an occasional tip, but I’m surprised at how quickly they learn the tools by merely trying them out.
It reminds me of a day way ...

It seems that most graphic artists can be categorized in two ways. (Yes, I’m already generalizing, and yes there are always exceptions – let’s get that out of the way upfront). There are the schooled artists and the non-schooled.
I don’t know if I’ve ever met a schooled graphic artist who wasn’t deeply embedded in the Adobe school. Many schooled artists don’t even consider other software.
Is it too soon for an aside already? Yes? Well bear with me.
I always thought it ironic that so many graphic artists used a Mac and Adobe products. They complain about how the Mac is superior to Windows yet it’s far behind in sales and popularity. And how those unenlightened Windows users would be convinced of the Mac’s superiority if only they’d give it a serious chance. Then they sit down and use Adobe products and ignore similar complaints from the CorelDraw community. If only they’d ...

From 1992 until 1996, I used Adobe Illustrator exclusively. I used at my job, so this was not low-end hobby use. It was full-time, high end output. Daily. In late 1996, my boss took it upon himself to hire a graphic artist who I would train, but I wasn’t consulted on who was hired. The new guy showed up to work on his first day with a copy of CorelDraw 6 under his arm and a goofy grin on his face. I told him I had used version 5 and really felt it was far behind Illustrator 6 that was currently on the market. To be fair, I let him install it and show me what it could do.
A month later, we had Draw on all of our computers and I never used Illustrator full-time again. I had to admit that this goofy new guy had shown me a product ...
