This is an article years in the making because it took me a long time to realize what I needed to do to lose fat – which in my case was around my stomach – while also gaining muscle. Some say it can’t be done, and I was beginning to believe that. I’ve always been able to either lose fat or gain muscle, but until recently never found a way to do both. It seems an impossible task, as you basically need to increase intake to make muscle gains and decrease intake to lose fat. I’ve perused forums and articles and honestly some of that stuff seemed like it required a degree in nutrition and sports medicine to understand. So for those of you out there who aren’t partial to “cycling” or other mental acrobatics that seem to be required here, read on to see how I finally managed to ...

Having dealt with gum diseases gingivitis and periodontal disease, this article is written with a bit of experience behind it. Below is my personal daily routine for helping to combat gum disease. It’s a sort of consensus I compiled via forums, websites, word of mouth, and other literature on the subject. I’m no dentist, and the information in this article is only for information based on my own experience. This isn’t intended to replace proper dental care. But if you’re looking for some cheap, natural, at-home ideas for combating gum disease, perhaps my routine will help you.

When doing research for at-home, natural gum disease treatments and cures, I read a lot of conflicting information. I’ve read conspiracy theories about fluoride and dentistry in general. Taking everything into consider, what I came up with was probably the least offensive of all treatments, combined into one daily treatment plan which I have been using ...

When I was in college, I used to always complain about how tired I was. A great man I studied with used to tell me, “You’re too young to be tired.” Nowadays we see store shelves lined with “energy” drinks and energy shots, which tells me that people suffer from bouts of low energy en masse. Here’s an excellent article from Medline about the causes of low energy.
It should be noted that this article isn’t written by a doctor, and you should consult one if you are having any problems. The information below is based on my own experience and is in no way intended to diagnose or treat any condition. It is for informational purposes only.
B Vitamins
Years ago when I needed a boost in energy, I’d take a B multivitamin. If you notice these “all natural” energy shots, B vitamins are indeed the primary ingredient used to increase energy. So ...

I’ve always been a vivid dreamer, and my fascination with them runs deep. I’ve read books on dreams, and during my psychology studies in college I asked a lot of questions about them. I discuss dreams on an almost daily basis. Whenever a conversation on dreams comes up, the burning question always revolves around the purpose of dreams, if any. This article won’t attempt to interpret the individual symbols in dreams, but to discuss the purpose of dreams themselves.
Although many authors and “experts” take sides on the issue, I’m a firm believer that there is no single purpose of all dreams. A dream must first be interpreted, after which a purpose can be surmised.
Keep in mind that a dream’s purpose and a dream’s interpretation aren’t the same thing. If a dream is literal, the purpose is usually obvious. Sometimes a dream seems literal, but it is actually symbolic. A dream about ...

My hands get cold anytime the temperature drops below about 70 degrees. And when I say cold – I mean COLD. It almost seems as if my hands are colder than the outside air, which is actually impossible. Nothing will make a woman jump out of sleep faster than a pair of cold hands snuggling up next to her at night.
I’ve asked several doctors about it over the years, and I’ve never really been satisfied with the answers I’ve received. The first diagnosis was nearly 20 years ago, when I was told it could be Raynaud’s Syndrome. The problem is, after reading up on Raynaud’s – it just doesn’t seem to fit my symptoms. I’ve been told my veins may be deeper below the surface than normal, thus less warming blood reaches the surface. Not sure about that explanation either. One doctor wanted to put me on a low dose ...

I’m Mr. Spreadsheet, so this weight loss tip is chock-full of bias. On the other hand, it has worked for me, so perhaps it can work for you.
My first big weight loss epiphany occurred 10 years ago. I was about 40 pounds overweight and knew it was time to do something. I’m of the opinion that if you’re going to do something as important and daunting as losing weight, you have to do it full-throttle. You’re either all-in or you’re off the wagon. That’s how I see it. So what I did then, and continue to do now whenever I feel I need to re-focus, is to keep a spreadsheet of everything related to weight-loss. Such items include:
Calories
I firmly believe that’s it’s a lot easier to avoid a couple of hundred extra calories than to burn them off later. Have you ever seen how long it takes to burn 100 ...

I wrote an article here on wafflestanoon.com a few years ago about spotting signs of meth use. The response to that article, even three years later, has been overwhelming. It’s gratifying to get the emails that I do, but also disheartening to see that so many people are still living with users of this horrible drug. I’ve tried to answer as many emails as I can on this issue, but there is one piece of advice that I’ve given so often, that I thought it might be time to just write it once for everyone to read, and it happened to me. This is when the loved one of a meth user becomes obsessed with trying to prove or cure the addiction.

In my own case, my wife always categorically denied her use – even though it was painfully obvious that she was high or crashing. To quote the 1999 film ...

Now that the absolute shock of Jack LaLanne’s death is fading a bit, I can’t help but going over some nagging questions surrounding his death. No, I’m not a conspiracy theorist by any means. I idolized Jack LaLanne. But still, a few things about the whole situation continue to bother me.

Reports were that he had been sick for a week. Other reports were that he exercised vigorously up until his last day. If he had pneumonia, I can’t fathom a strenuous workout hours before death. And if he had been in such rapidly declining health, why didn’t he go to the hospital? Why didn’t he have the pneumonia vaccine, and if he did – why didn’t it work? Did his heart valve replacement in 2009 contribute?
Again, this isn’t an attack in the least. The whole thing just raises a lot of questions that weren’t answered in the news reports. Jack ...

I just heard that “fitness guru” Jack LaLanne passed away today, apparently from respiratory failure due to pneumonia. I never had the privilege to meet the great Jack LaLanne, but he completely changed my life. That man probably crossed my mind every day for nearly a decade as I discovered the world of fitness. Jack LaLanne was a household name in my home among my kids and I. And even though the headlines tomorrow will focus on the winners of today’s NFL games, in my world there is no news story that can hold a candle to the passing of this great man.

Some may say that living to 96 is quite an accomplishment, and it is. But this guy was my Superman. He was for a lot of people, because his long live proved he was onto something. He didn’t eat sugar or white flour. He ate raw fruits and vegetables, avoided ...

When I was a kid in the 1970′s, bed bugs were relegated to the nighttime saying. I had never met anyone who actually had first hand experience with bed bugs, aside from stories from older people. They were about as common as small pox in my universe. So how did bed bugs make a comeback in recent years? There are actually several reasons.

Increased international travel in recent decades has played a role. Though international travel isn’t new, it has increased in the past 2 decades with internet travel packages and small countries jockeying for more traffic.
Bed bugs have actually become resistant to pesticides, which combined with reduced pesticide treatment by hotels has allowed bed bugs to proliferate more easily. With a lack of pesticide residue in hotel rooms, the bugs can move about more freely – which will allow them to find a home in your luggage while you sleep.
