The current state of the economy has been particularly hard on parents with young children. These families are often forced to decide between a two-income family with children in daycare, or a single-income family and surviving on meager means.
On the front lines of this constant struggle are child care facilities themselves, who are also attempting to balance between keeping their doors open and accommodating families in this extended recession.
So we sat down with Tony Foskey from Children’s Friend Learning Centers, Inc., with locations throughout Georgia, and asked him to shed some light on the child care industry for us.
WAN: Tell us a little about Children’s Friend Learning Centers and the chid care industry.
CF: The child care industry is extremely fragmented. The largest provider, Kindercare controls an estimated 1% of the industry.
Wikipedia states “In general, the geographic limitations and the diversity in type of daycare providers make child daycare a highly ...

Craft beer has become a phenomenon in recent years and in fact yours truly here at Wafflesatnoon has become a sort of recent craft beer fan convert, hopping comfortably on the bandwagon. The more I’ve learned about craft beer, the more fascinating it becomes… And the more questions I have. So I decided to seek answers from those who originally showed me the craft beer light, namely the beer fanatics at Cosmo’s Beer Blog. We asked Mike, one of the contributors, to sit down and clarify a few questions about the hobby for us.
Waffles: Why do you think craft beer has suddenly become such a phenomenon? Or has the rise in popularity been as sudden as it seems?
Mike: I think the surge of interest in craft beer has been coming for a long time. The beer market has been dominated by the same macro-brewing companies since the end of prohibition, and these ...

North Korean leader Kim Jong Il’s death was breaking news around the world this weekend. While serious news organizations pondered the implications of said news, and offered commentary on the leader’s life and career, the mood on Twitter was a bit lighter. In fact, the social network lit up with Kim Jong Il jokes, from the first moments that the news was made public. Immediately we saw “He’s not IL, he’s dead” jokes. But others were even more creative.
Below are 40 of our favorite humorous tweets about Kim Jong Il’s death, most of which came in the initial moments after the news broke.

Why does Jerry Sandusky give interviews? His lawyer is probably the first person to ask that question. If he can’t answer a simple question like “Are you attracted to young boys” without absolute conviction, then he should hand those interviews off to his legal team.
In a recent interview, Sandusky gave questionable answers to straightforward questions about his behavior. Let’s take a look at some of the more eyebrow-raising comments (I’ve eliminated stammering words such as “you know” and “uh” for clarity).
“He (Paterno) was coming to me with a concern because somebody had talked to him about inappropriate behavior in the shower… I told him that it didn’t happen and in my mind there wasn’t inappropriate behavior.”
In my mind?!
Why use a conditional statement such as “in my mind” – does this mean that what happened could have been deemed inappropriate in the minds of others? If so, this could imply that ...

A trending video on Youtube re-addresses the question of whether or not the US penny should be discontinued. The video doesn’t address a new issue, as it’s been a raging debate for years. A few bills have been introduced to Congress over the years seeking to drop the penny from our currency lineup, but all have failed. Here at Waffles, we think the penny has had its day. Let it take its place next to the half-cent of the 19th century. The US wastes enough money already, so why waste money creating nearly worthless money that’s more of a nuisance than anything else?
Proponents of keeping the penny have few good reasons for keeping it compared to the benefits of dropping it. But the penny has been around forever, so people are used to it, despite its almost worthless value. Still, a groundswell of support for abolishing the penny is slowly taking ...

It was only about a month ago that we had to dissect a fabricated story about Christians supposedly burned alive in Nigeria. That story was untrue. Now we have another story popping up on social media of Christians being attacked by a Nigerian Islamist group called Boko Haram, this time with some element of truth mixed with some interpolated facts. Consider the following:
• Boko Haram is real and have engaged in violence in Nigeria, including an attack in November 2011 that did kill about 67 people, as stated on social media.
• The photo being circulated is not of murdered Christians, nor did news stories of the attacks state that Christians were specifically targeted.
The photo (below) on Facebook commonly has the following caption:
67 -Christians killed by a radical Muslim group in NIGERIA
A radical Muslim sect known locally as Boko Haram claimed responsibility Saturday for the attacks, which represent the most ...

With HLN providing nearly 24 hour coverage, the deliberations were among the day’s hottest headlines. Twitter users were among the most vocal in their anticipation of the verdict. Below is a recap of the day’s timeline of Twitter activity on the #MurrayTrial topic. Times listed are PST.
The day began as news magazines focused on the the possibility that a verdict could arrive today. We see a more personal note from Michael Jackson’s sister La Toya when she sent a tweet out early in the morning:

You have to love social media, where old news can resurface and become new again. This week has seen a surge in the sharing of the photo of Parrot, the dog who was killed by police during a Washington DC festival. The caption reads:
The dog was named Parrot.
This was taken moments before Parrot was murdered by the cop. The cop drove his knee into the middle of Parrot’s back while stretching Parrot’s forelegs behind him, as one would do with an armed criminal. Without waiting to determine whether this technique would calm Parrot, the cop grabbed Parrot, lifted him off the ground, and brought him to the top of the concrete staircase.
He threw Parrot over the banister, down twelve steps, and onto the concrete floor. Then, the cop stood at the top of the stairs, drew his weapon, and executed Parrot. Aaron, the animal’s owner, cannot recall the number of ...

A photo floating around the internet shows a picture of an officer swinging a club at a child, with a caption that reads:
Police assault on child worker striking western clothing factory for wages and conditions, Bangladesh, 2011. Estimates of child workers are from 250 million to 500 million, most in brutal & dangerous conditions, all by well-dressed & manicured employers. That might be even worse than feudalism.
How real is this photo and is the caption accurate?
The photo is real as is the general sentiment of the caption, though the caption does have some inaccuracies. First, the photo is not from 2011, but first published on June 29, 2010 by the Guardian. In the gallery and accompanying story from the Guardian, you can read the full story of the event. What took place were protest of garment workers who demanded higher wages. Police used tear gas and batons to clear out the protests, ...

It has been announced that Kim Kardashian is filing for divorce today, verified by news “giant” Ryan Seacrest on Twitter. Perhaps when Kim saw Kris Humphries in his Halloween Frankenstein costume and didn’t notice much difference, she had second thoughts? OK, bad joke.. but anyone who has seen Keeping Up With The Kardashians has pretty much figured out early on that this wasn’t a legit marriage. And now that it’s officially headed to the big D, there’s a sense by some fans of being duped by the marriage – for money and ratings. Is there anything the Kardashians won’t do for money at this point? While the show was mildly amusing in the early years, it has evolved into a parade of wealth and entitlement.
Perhaps their rise to self-proclaimed royalty was stated best by the soon-to-be-ex-Mr.-Kardashian Kris Humphries on the show, when he snapped at Kim, “Four years ago you were ...
