Does this Photo Show a Massive Storm Approaching the Statue of Liberty?

As Hurricane Sandy approaches the East Coast, a photo has been circulating purporting to show ominous clouds behind the Statue of Liberty. Is this photo real or fake?

It’s fake.

Someone merely combined a photo of the Statue of Liberty with an impressive photo by photographer Mike Hollingshead to create this picture. And this isn’t the first time this exact photo has been used. Over the past several years it has been passed around whenever a large storm hits New York.

The photo being circulated is below:

Below is the original photo, taken on May 28, 2004 by Mike Hollingshead, who by the way, has a rather impressive body of work if you are interested.

Update: Another photo has surfaced, also purported to be a “storm surge” from Hurricane Sandy. The photo being shared is below:

This is merely an image taken from the 2004 film “The Day After Tomorrow. You can see discussion of this photo from this May 2004 review.
