Hot Huez Review

Applying Hot Huez requires you to “pinch” a small section of hair in the compact and slide the unit along the hair, which applies the chalk color. There is a spongy side and a chalky side of the compact. The chalk side goes on the outside, where you want the color to show. There is a tendency when applying to want to squeeze the compact harder than necessary. This can pull or break hair, and will apply the color unevenly. We found it better to go slowly and lightly, and repeat until it had the desired look. The sponge in the compact has a tendency to fall out, which can be a minor annoyance.

The Hot Huez instructions tell you to “seal in” the color with hair spray so the color doesn’t get on your clothes. Don’t skip this step. Though we did apply hair spray, we still found Hot Huez to be on the messy side, with colored chalk finding its way to our hands, clothes, and furniture. You may want to go heavier on the hair spray to keep the chalk in your hair and not on your clothes and skin.

A few other items of note:

  • Hot Huez seemed to work better on lighter colored hair, though we found the pink seemed best suited to darker hair colors.
  • Press down on the middle of the compact while applying color, not the edges.
  • Use smaller sections of hair, not giant clumps. This seemed to facilitate a more even application.
  • Wearing some cheap rubber gloves may help keep the chalk off your hands.

Hot Huez vs Regular Chalk

Hot Huez is not the only hair chalk available. In fact, you can find do-it-yourself articles on how to chalk your hair with regular pastel chalk, which is considerably cheaper. See, for example, this Seventeen article from 2011, entitled diy: hair chalking!

Bottom Line

Hot Huez worked moderately well in our tests, but we found the chalk to be a bit on the messy side and the colors weren’t always as bright as expected. If you want to try it, buy it locally to avoid shipping charges, and to facilitate the return process if necessary.
