Why is Iran Building a Fake Aircraft Carrier?

It has been reported that Iran is building a “nonworking” replica of a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft. Experts have offered possible explanations for the fake ship.

The New York Times reported this week that satellite photos show the vessel in Iran which closely resembles US Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. Fake aircraft have also be seen on the deck.

A Navy spokesman said he did not believe it was  functioning aircraft carrier. “It’s a large barge built to look like an aircraft carrier,” he said.

Theory

Intelligence officials have suggested that the vessel – which is only about two-third the length of a real aircraft carrier – may be taken to the sea and blown up on film for propaganda purposes. It has also been suggested that the fake aircraft carrier could be used for training purposes prior to being demolished.

Navy officials believe the ship is close to completion and will soon find its way to the Persian Gulf, which is only a few hundred yards away.
