Heterosexual Flag

In a post entitled Our Response to Gay Marriage! We support traditional family values! the flag was described as part of a celebration on July 8 known as Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.

The flag, which features silhouettes of a man, woman, and three children, was cited as a direct response to the recent legalization of gay marriage in the United States. “They do not even realize that it is a pointless activity,” one announcement read.

Printed on the flag is a hashtag in Russian, which translates to read, “A Real Family.”

Deputy head of the United Russia branch in Moscow Andrei Lisovenko said, “This is our response to same-sex marriage, this mockery of the concept of family. We have to warn gay fever at home and maintain traditional values.”

Izvestia.ru noted the recent spread of the LGBT rainbow flag on social media, “appearing on the avatars of ordinary users, and the official website of the White House.” It also noted that Lisovenko submitted a proposal to make the LGBT flag a “forbidden symbol” in the Russian Federation.

The heterosexual flag was made available in three colors, and could be seen at the July 8 event.

A keen Twitter user noted that the Russian flag appears to borrow the design of La Manif Pour Tous, a French group against same-sex marriage. The Russian flag merely added one child silhouette to the design, but the rest is nearly identical.

Bottom Line

Russia unveiled a “heterosexual” flag which was cited as a response to “gay fever” following the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. Internet users have pointed out that the design of the flag is almost an exact copy of French group opposed to gay marriage.
