Yoshi Grill Mat Reviews

I went into an As Seen on TV store here in Las Vegas to ask about currently popular products. An employee showcased the new Yoshi Grill and Bake Mats, yet admitted customers were disappointed with the size of the mats. Instead, customers seemed to prefer a generic version of the Miracle Grill Mat, which is a similar As Seen on TV product pitched by Marc Gill. The generic version at the As Seen on TV store was about $10.

Below is a summary of some of the online reviews for the product:

Amazon – As of May 10, 2017 the Yoshi Grill and Bake Mat currently has 380 user reviews for a 3.9-star average. The 5-star reviews claim the product works as advertised. The 3-star reviews are mixed with one reviewer remarking on the absence of grill marks and juices from the grilled meat pooling on the Yoshi Grill Mat. The review voted “most helpful” states that it is “just too small.”

WMC-TV – Memphis, TN – Print review in which reviewer Andy Wise puts the Yoshi Grill and Bake Mat to the test with a professional chef. As a conclusion, they point out that the non-stick surface definitely worked, but the advertised perfect grill marks were absent. Wise shrewdly pointed out that the instructions for the Yoshi Grill and Bake Mat claimed that it should not be directly placed over a flame. When cooking meat, this resulted in a lack of grill marks, less flavor due to juices not being able to drip into the flame, and increased cooking time. However, they do claim that the Yoshi Grill and Bake Mat works wonderfully for vegetables, fish, and pizza.

WNEP – Moosic, PA – Video review in which the reporter took the Yoshi Grill and Bake Mat to be tested at a professional barbecue restaurant. Before beginning, they also pointed out that the instructions warned against using the Yoshi Grill and Bake Mat over an open flame. The chef expressed concern that the juices from the various meats he was grilling would pool and mix instead of falling into the grill. This is exactly what happened, and the chef commented that this was more akin to steaming and boiling than grilling. The promised grill marks were also absent, and the crew gives the Yoshi Grill Mat a unanimous thumbs down.

Search History

The chart below shows search history for the product. Interest increased through the first half of 2014, followed by a rapid decline. Despite the decline in interest, the product has still been seen advertising in January 2015.

Yoshi Copper Grill Mat

Although you can still find the original Yoshi Grill & Bake Mats in stores, the brand returned in 2016 with a “copper” version, the Yoshi Copper Grill Mat. You can see a review of that product in the video below.

Bottom Line

The Yoshi Grill and Bake Mat instructions prohibit the placing of mats directly over an open flame. Following these instructions may result in an absence of grill marks and an increased grilling time. Although the non-stick surface does work, many claim that the end result of using the Yoshi Grill and Bake Mat to grill meat is comparable to steaming or boiling instead or grilling due to the pooling of juices. Others claim that the mats are too small, and generic products that are more reasonably priced may be preferable.

Overall reviews appear to be generally positive, especially when used for veggies and fish. Because the product is readily available in stores, we recommend purchasing it locally to avoid shipping costs and delays.
