Clouds look weightless when they drift overhead, which makes it surprising to learn that a modest, puffy cumulus cloud can actually contain hundreds of thousands of kilograms of water. How Do You Weigh a Cloud?

The standard example used by the United States Geological Survey and other science outlets starts with a typical fair weather cumulus cloud. Imagine a cloud that is about 1 kilometer long, 1 kilometer wide, and 1 kilometer tall. That gives it a volume of one billion cubic meters.

Measurements show that each cubic meter of that cloud contains about half a gram of liquid water in the form of tiny droplets. Multiply that by one billion cubic meters and you get roughly 500 million grams of water, which is 500,000 kilograms.

Convert that to more familiar units, and you are looking at about 1.1 million pounds of water, or around 500 to 550 metric tons.

If It Is So Heavy, Why Does It Float?

The key is that the water in a cloud is spread out over a huge volume and mixed with air. The droplets are extremely small, and the air below the cloud is denser than the moist air inside it. The United States Geological Survey explains that a cloud floats for the same basic reason that a hot air balloon or a piece of wood floats in water. The fluid beneath it is heavier overall, so it can support the weight above.

In other words, the full mass of the cloud is large, but the weight is distributed so thinly through the air that it is not comparable to a solid object of the same mass sitting on the ground.

Not All Clouds Are Created Equal

The million-pound figure applies to a standard puffy cumulus cloud. Other cloud types vary quite a bit. Thin, wispy cirrus clouds can hold much less water, while towering thunderheads can hold much more. Some estimates suggest that large thunderstorm clouds can contain several times the water mass of a typical cumulus.

The common theme is that even the lightest looking cloud is a real physical structure, not a weightless decoration painted onto the sky.
