Researchers studying nighttime soundscapes in the Western Ghats documented a previously unknown forest cricket now named Ajareta sairandhriensis. Males of the species call from cavities in dead trees, where their songs are amplified like tiny natural speakers. The crickets produce a mix of continuous trills and discrete chirps at a dominant frequency of around 3.3 kilohertz.
On moonlit nights, their combined chorus carries far through the forest. Instead of the near silence that gave the valley its name, researchers reported a rich layer of insect sound that had simply gone undocumented.
From quiet myth to living soundscape
Silent Valley’s reputation dates back to earlier visitors who noticed the absence of loud cicada calls that are common in many tropical forests. That silence became part of the park’s identity and even a metaphor in writing about the region. The new findings show that the story was never that simple. Crickets, birds, and mammals all contribute to a more complex acoustic ecosystem than the nickname suggests.
