A news article circulating on social media today claims that Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann wants to ban Halloween because it leads to liberalism. Is the story true or false?
It’s fake.
The article originated from the Free Wood Post, a satirical website whose tagline reads “News That’s Almost Reliable.” In a post entitled, Michele Bachmann Wants to Ban Halloween Stating, “Sucking on Satan’s Candy Sacks Leads to Liberalism” we read a fictional quote from Bachmann:
“We have to ban Halloween to save the children. That’s how they indoctrinate them you know. Giving them Satan’s candy sacks. Soon you’ve got a country full of children sucking on Satan’s sacks and thinking liberal thoughts instead of good Christian ones.”
While most readers recognize the satirical nature of the post, some readers have shared it, unaware that it was meant to be a humorous piece.
A look at the “Satire Disclaimer” on the Free Wood Post reveals:
Free Wood Post is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within FreeWoodPost.com are fiction, and presumably fake news.
Bottom Line
Michele Bachmann has not announced a desire to ban Halloween. The article was posted on a satirical website.
