Poorly Translated “Eating Carpet” Sign Raises Eyebrows

A poorly-translated sign at an Indian airport reads, “Eating carpet strictly prohibited.”

The sign includes texts in Hindi and English, with the English portion reading “Eating carpet strictly prohibited.”

The sign was photographed by businessman Justin Ross Lee at Chennai International Airport in August 2015.

What an outrage India. All I want to do is go down on your curry-stained airport carpet…

Lee’s photo of the sign has circulated heavily on social media with some amused by the English double-entendre.

It appears that the sign was meant to prohibit people from sitting and eating on the carpet, although that sentiment is lost in the translation.
