An image online shows a girl in a bed who is allegedly fighting for her life, and funds are allegedly being raised to pay for her operation. Today we’ll look at this claim and the photo itself.
The story and photo are unrelated, and no one is raising funds.
No one is donating money based on shares, likes, or comments. The girl in the photo was killed back in 2010 in Pakistan, and was the subject of a controversial investigation and trial. We first wrote of this photo back in mid-2013 and we are seeing a resurgence of sharing of the image in March 2014.
First let’s look at the claim being made online regarding this photo.

DONT FORGET TO LIKE
The story above has absolutely nothing to do with the girl in the image being circulated with it. Tragically, the girl in the photo died back in January 2010. The narrative more closely aligns with an unrelated case of a 9-year old girl who was abused by three men in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. The account of that incident reported:
According to the FIR, the girl, a student of class two, was abducted from in front of her house in Manzoorabad in Rahim Yar Khan by three women and a man. She was taken to a dera, where she was raped by three men, one of them identified in the FIR. She was also beaten up before she was abandoned in front of her home.
Her mother told police that she had found the girl near their house. She was bleeding and close to fainting. She said when she was taking her to the police station, when one of the kidnappers stopped her and threatened to kill her if she informed the police.
Shazia Murder Case
The girl in the photo, 12-year old Shazia Masih, mysteriously died while in the company of her employer, Chaudhry Naeem. Naeem claimed she fell down the stairs, but autopsy reports indicated she was raped and abused. Naeem was acquitted in the wake of conflicting reports and the omission of the autopsy report at the trial, along with conflicting data that showed she died of a skin disease.
What to do if you see it
If you see such posts, report the image and report the page. If you see someone sharing this bogus story, encourage them to unlike the page from which it originated and to delete their post.
Bottom Line
This is yet another example of a shameless like-collecting hoax which takes advantage of the dead for social media gains. Facebook does not donate for shares, likes, or comments. Further, the girl in the photo has been deceased for several years.
This fake post did, however, begin with a morsel of truth when it claimed, “The devil is a liar.”
