CNBC reported today that it may cost you $100 to send Mark Zuckerberg a private message on Facebook. We’ll look a little closer at the story.
While they did post a screenshot that shows a $100 charge to send Zuck a message to his Inbox (as opposed to his “Other” folder), CNBC didn’t provide details on how they managed to find such a message, nor did they specifically state when their screenshot was taken.
We sent Zuckerberg a private message, and no such option to pay $100 appeared for us. While it’s doubtful that we’ll get a response, we did ask him about the story while we were at it.
If you look a little closer at the CNBC article, you’ll find that they concede that there is a small trial that was announced last month which would allow users to pay $1 to deliver a message to a stranger’s inbox as opposed to their “Other” folder, and would be limited to one incident per week.
Bottom Line
We were not asked to pay $100 when we sent such a message, and others have reported no such message either. Until Facebook makes such an announcement, or until we can duplicate the experience reported by CNBC, we don’t believe the $100 fee to message Mark Zuckerberg will ever materialize.
