After Paul Walker's death on November 30, rumors surrounding the future of the Fast and Furious film franchise have circulated heavily on social media. One of those rumors states that pop star Justin Bieber will replace Walker in the seventh installment of the series, which had been shooting at the time of the actor's death. Is there any truth to this rumor?
It is false.
The rumor surrounding Bieber’s involvement stems from an interview with Ludacris in May 2013 and a story from July 2013 which speculated that the pop singer may land a role in the upcoming Fast and Furious 7 film. The article from Hollywood Life included a clip of the interview with Ludacris in which he was asked if Justin Bieber may have a role in the seventh installment of the Fast franchise. In the interview, Ludacris stated that the film was being written “as we speak.” When asked if Justin Bieber may be “angling for a part,” Ludacris responded, “He’s probably ready to shoot, I guarantee… I think he’s gonna love this movie so much he’s gonna try to get in here.” He also added there were “a lot of people fighting for position to get parts in the movie, but we’ll see how we can incorporate everybody.”
Ludacris did not say that Bieber had a role in the film, and Paul Walker was still alive at the time of this interview.
After the Ludacris interview, badly-Photoshopped photos (see below) and fan-made videos and trailers began appearing online by eager fans of the pop star in hopes that he may have an appearance in the film. There were, however, no announcements regarding a starring role for Bieber in the movie, nor has he since been slated to replace Walker.
Universal did state that Fast & Furious 7 would shut down “for a period of time so we can assess all options available to move forward with the franchise.” When asked if the film would eventually be resumed, direct director James Wan simply answered, “Yes.” Other than that, there have been no definitive announcements or decisions made regarding Paul Walker’s role in the film.
There have been no announcements that Justin Bieber will star in Fast 7, or that he will replace Paul Walker in the film. This speculation stems from an interview with Ludacris discussing a possible role for Bieber in the film months before production had begun.
