A rumor that Chipotle is honoring a “100% free food” coupon is a hoax. In the words of the popular chain: “There’s no such thing as a free lunch – or burrito for that matter.”
The graphic in circulation claims that this coupon is good for a free meal for one person, good until March 20. It writes, “Repost, tag us, and follow for a free meal for one person, that’s right, Free… Show this ad to your cashier for 100% free food. Only one per person. Valid until March 20th.”
Chipotle has responded to the fake coupon via social media. On facebook, they posted,
“There’s no such thing as a free lunch – or burrito for that matter. The “repost, tag, and follow for FREE” offer that is floating around the interwebs is A HOAX. Not real. Not from Chipotle. -Joe”
The company also fielded questions about the bogus coupon on Twitter, with a common response being, “Sorry, that is a scam.”
The fake coupon lacks a bar code, terms, or any tracking method. It also contains some grammatical errors (March not being capitalized, for example).
The coupon sparked some debate on the company’s Facebook page, with some fans believing Chipotle should have done something to appease those who were duped by the hoax. Others defended the chain, pointing out that they had nothing to do with the fake coupon.
The popular Mexican grill is no stranger to internet hoaxes. A Valentine’s Day hoax in 2013 and 2014 had the internet buzzing that Chipotle was giving away free burritos to anyone who kissed in their stores.
