Debt Collector Spotlight: Professional Recovery Consultants

Debt Collector Spotlight: Professional Recovery Consultants

Today we’re taking a look at Professional Recovery Consultants, a debt collector who has been around for over 30 years and boasts a “virtually complaint-free environment.”

Professional Recovery Consultants (PRC) specializes in recovering debt from industries such as healthcare, retail & finance, utilities, government, commercial business, and education.

If you have received a call from them, you likely owe someone a debt and PRC is attempting to collect that debt on their behalf.

This particular collector usually calls from the number 866-936-9207.

If this is a very old debt
It isn’t clear how old of debt PRC will attempt to collect. As we’ve stated in past articles, debt collectors employ many tactics to try to get you on the phone. If you answer their calls, they may tell you that they’re looking for a friend or relative that you haven’t seen for years. Some may try to make you believe they are calling from an attorney’s office. Debt collectors who purchase old debt do so for pennies on the dollar in hopes they can collect it to make a profit. They are racing against the clock to collect as they only have 7 years from the time of the original delinquency to legally come after you. In most cases, after 7 years they cannot pursue a bad debt in the courts, but they can call and write to you about it as long as they want – and they probably will. If you made payments on this old debt, it is possible they will have 7 years from the time of your last payment. Just because they purchased the debt recently does not mean they have 7 years to collect. The 7-year time frame begins on the date of the original delinquency. Again, it is not clear if PRC even accepts debt of this age.

Professional Recovery Consultants are headquartered in North Carolina, and their BBB profile claims they have 95 employees. They have been accredited with the BBB since 1988. They have only had 7 complaints in the past 3 years and maintain an A+ rating. For a debt collector, this is actually a pretty good scorecard. That doesn’t mean they are without flaws, but we’ve reviewed debt collectors with over 1000 complaints in the same time.

Multiple Calls?
Debt collectors can only contact you between the hours of 8am and 9pm. They are allowed to call you at work, on the weekends, or holidays until you specifically tell them not to do so. If you don’t answer, and they don’t leave a message, this isn’t considered contacting you – which is why people complain of collectors calling multiple times throughout the day. You must tell them that certain times or calling your work phone is inconvenient, and they must obey this request.

What to do?
Some people choose to ignore debt collectors, while others prefer to try and clear things up. That’s up to you. We’ve heard from people who claim they’ve been called by other debt collectors regarding debt nearly 20 years old. The newer the debt, the better off you are trying to settle up. If you choose to talk to them, tell them that under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) section 809, you request validation of the debt (this should be done in writing), and give them no other information until they comply. If you choose not to talk to them, watch your mail carefully. Should they decide it’s in their best interest to sue you, you may receive a letter to that effect. Should you receive such a letter, you will want to send a certified letter to them requesting validation of the debt, as required by section 809 of the FDCPA. Below is a link to a much more in-depth article about how to deal with debt collectors.

A good option is to invoke section 805 of the FDCPA, notifying the collector that they are to cease all communications regarding this debt, outside of any legal notifications, such as a lawsuit.
