Ubuntu Checking Disk at Every Reboot? Try This.

Does your Ubuntu system check your hard drive for errors upon every reboot? We were having the same problem and found a solution that worked for us. Maybe it will help you, too.

First, we should mention that the system on which this was occurring was running Ubuntu 12.10. Also, Ubuntu will try to run a check for errors after every 30 reboots. But in our case, Ubuntu was checking the disk every time, whether we let it check or not.

First, if you keep skipping the disk check, be sure you’ve let the system actually check your disk. Also, be sure you’re shutting the computer down properly each time.

If you know you’re doing everything right, then it may be your video driver. We had to change our video driver from the default open source version to one of the proprietary drivers in order to fix our system from waking up from Suspend. While this change in drivers fixed that problem, we began seeing the disk check at every reboot.

At this point we have had to choose whether or not we want a computer that won’t wake from Suspend, or one that checks the disk upon every reboot. We felt that the latter was less annoying, as we merely have to hit “C” to get onto the system boot.
