That Time Napoleon Was Attacked by Hundreds of Rabbits

Published on

Napoleon Bonaparte won dozens of military victories, commanded empires, and reshaped Europe, yet one of his most unusual defeats came at the paws of a swarm of surprisingly aggressive rabbits.

After a hunting event, released rabbits swarmed Napoleon instead of fleeing. Accounts say hundreds charged directly toward the emperor’s party. The rabbits reportedly jumped into carriages and clung to boots.

The Setup: A Celebratory Rabbit Hunt

After signing the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807, Napoleon’s staff arranged a celebratory rabbit hunt. Depending on the source, between several hundred and several thousand rabbits were gathered in cages to release for the event.

The Release… Did Not Go as Planned

When the rabbits were set loose, they didn’t sprint for freedom. Instead, they turned and charged directly at Napoleon.

Historians believe the animals were domesticated rabbits, which were used to associating humans with food. Rather than fleeing from the emperor, they saw a giant walking buffet.

“A Furry Onslaught”

Witnesses claimed:

“The rabbits swarmed Napoleon’s legs, climbed his boots, and spilled into the hunting wagons.”

Napoleon retreated to his carriage, but the rabbits reportedly followed and even attempted to hop inside.

One of History’s Most Harmless Defeats

Napoleon survived countless battles, but never quite lived down the day he was overrun by bunnies.
