The penny-in-the-tread trick has been passed around for years as an easy way to tell if your tires are worn out. You stick a penny into the tread, look at Abraham Lincoln’s head, and supposedly you know if it is time for new tires. But is that actually a reliable way to measure tire wear, or is it an outdated shortcut that gives a false sense of security? And with pennies recently discontinued, fans of the penny test may soon need a new go-to coin anyway.

The penny test is based on real measurements. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tread depth is about 2/32 of an inch, which is the legal minimum in many places. In that sense it does measure something real. The problem is that 2/32 is the bare minimum, not the point where the tire is still performing well, especially in rain or snow. Many experts now suggest using a quarter to check for 4/32 of tread, or better yet, a simple tread-depth gauge, instead of relying on a penny alone.
What the Penny Test Is Supposed to Do
The idea behind the penny test is simple and easy to remember:
- Take a penny and position it so Lincoln’s head is upside down and facing you.
- Insert it into a tread groove on your tire.
- If the tread covers part of Lincoln’s head, you have more than 2/32 of tread left.
- If you can see the top of his head, the tread depth is at or below 2/32 and the tire is considered worn out.
In the United States, 2/32 of an inch is widely used as the minimum legal tread depth. The U.S. Department of Transportation and many tire makers treat 2/32 as the point where a tire should be replaced, and many state laws use that same limit for passenger vehicles.1, 2
Why Many People Say the Penny Test Is Outdated
The penny test is not exactly a hoax, but it also is not the whole story. There are several reasons it is often described as outdated or incomplete.
1. It checks the legal minimum, not the safe minimum
At 2/32, your tires are at the edge of what is allowed by law, not at the peak of their performance. Independent tests and tire industry guidelines suggest that wet traction and braking ability can drop off long before you reach that point, especially as tread gets closer to 3/32 or 4/32.3, 4
In other words, a tire that “passes” the penny test might still have noticeably worse grip in rain compared to a tire with deeper tread.
2. It is crude and imprecise
A penny can only give you a rough yes or no at around 2/32. It will not tell you whether you have 9/32, 6/32, or 4/32 left. It also cannot show subtle changes in wear, which can matter for handling and stopping distance.
3. It does not account for uneven wear
Tires seldom wear perfectly evenly. The inner or outer edges may wear faster than the center, especially if there are alignment or inflation issues. A quick check in one spot with a penny might look fine, while another area on the same tire is close to bald.
That is why tire makers recommend checking several points around the tread, and why built-in “wear bars” are molded into the grooves to show when the tire has reached about 2/32 across the whole surface.5
4. It does not address age and other problems
Tread depth is only part of the safety picture. Old tires can become dry, cracked, or brittle even if they still have plenty of tread. Many automakers and tire brands advise replacing tires based on age, often around six years in service, regardless of tread depth.6, 7
Bubbles, cuts, cords showing, and damaged sidewalls are also serious issues that a penny test will never reveal.
The Quarter Test and Other Alternatives
As awareness has grown about performance dropping before the 2/32 mark, some shops and tire guides have promoted the “quarter test” instead.
The quarter test
- Take a U.S. quarter and place it in the tread with George Washington’s head upside down and facing you.
- If the tread touches or covers the top of his head, you have about 4/32 of tread or more.
- If you can see space above his head, the tread is under about 4/32.
Many tire professionals now suggest treating 4/32 as the practical “time to start planning for new tires” mark, especially if you drive in wet or snowy conditions, because braking and resistance to hydroplaning suffer below that depth.8, 9
Using a tread depth gauge
A basic tread depth gauge is cheap and much more precise than a coin. You press the probe into a groove and read the depth directly, usually in 32nds of an inch.
- New tires are often around 10/32 to 11/32 deep.
- Many experts consider 6/32 “good,” 4/32 “time to plan a replacement,” and 2/32 “replace now.”5, 8
Checking the built-in wear bars
Most modern tires have small raised rubber bars molded into the grooves, called wear indicators or wear bars. When the surrounding tread wears down to the same level as these bars, the tire is at about 2/32 of tread and should be replaced.5
How to Check Your Tires Properly
If you really want to know whether your tires are safe, a single penny test in one spot is not enough. A better routine looks more like this:
- Use a tread gauge or at least a quarter. Aim to replace or plan a replacement around 4/32, and treat 2/32 as your absolute limit.
- Check several spots. Measure across the width of the tread and around the circumference to spot uneven wear.
- Look for damage. Watch for cracks, bulges, punctures, exposed cords, and sidewall bubbles.
- Consider age. If your tires are around six years old or more, have them inspected yearly and be ready to replace them even if the tread seems acceptable.6, 7
- Match the season. In snow and slush, you may want deeper tread than the basic minimum to maintain traction.
Common Myths About the Penny Test
- “If my tires pass the penny test, they are safe.”
Passing the penny test only means you are at or above the legal minimum, not that your stopping distance and traction are still strong in all conditions. - “The penny test is the official standard.”
The law is written in terms of tread depth, such as 2/32, not pennies. The penny trick is just a convenient way for drivers to approximate that number. - “I only need to check one spot.”
Tires often wear unevenly. Only checking one groove can easily miss a worn inner edge or an area that is almost bald. - “Deep tread means a tire is always safe.”
Deep tread on an old, cracked, or damaged tire is not a guarantee of safety. Age and condition matter too.
So, Is the Penny Test Legit?
The penny-in-the-tread method is built on a real measurement. It does give a rough indication of whether a tire is at the 2/32 legal minimum. In that sense, it is not a fake trick.
However, it is also a very low bar. By the time your tires fail the penny test, their performance in wet conditions may already have dropped significantly, and other issues like age or damage may be just as important as tread depth. For a more realistic safety margin, a quarter or a tread depth gauge, combined with a visual inspection and awareness of tire age, provide a much better picture than a single penny test ever could.
