An email which first circulated heavily in early 2014 claimed to be from Apple, requesting users to update their billing information. It’s a scam.
The Scam
Let’s first take a look at the email in circulation:
Dear Customer,
It has come to our attention that your account Billing Information records are out of date. That requires you to update your Billing Information. Failure to update your records will result in account termination.
Click on the reference link below and enter your login information on the following page to confirm your Billing Information records…
Click on http://store.apple.com to confirm your Billing Information records.
Thanks,
Apple Customer Support
Although the link looks like it is from store.apple.com, the link actually points to a domain in Switzerland. Should you click on the link you’ll see a login screen, asking you to “Sign in to verify your email address.”
This website, however, is not associated with Apple. If you enter your login information, you will be handing your username and password over to scammers.
Bottom Line
The Apple “Update Your Billing Information” email is a scam. The email does not come from Apple, and this is an attempt to steal your information.
