A fake news article circulating online suggests that the planet will experience 15 days of darkness in late November 2015.
15 Days of Darkness
The false story comes from the website Newswatch33, which is known to produce fake, and often ridiculous, news-like posts which are often heavily shared due to their shocking headlines.
The fake story claims that Earth will experience 15 days of darkness between November 15 and November 29, 2015. The bogus story claims this event hasn’t happened for over a million years.
This is nothing more than a variation on a hoax which has circulated in different forms since 2012, with the number of days seeming to increase each time (originally it was 3 days, then 6, now 15).
As corroborated by our friends at Hoax-Slayer, this is not the first time such a rumor has circulated. We have covered several warnings of “days of darkness” of varying lengths since 2012, as compiled in this post. Further, in October 2014 NASA’s Earth Observatory responded to an earlier version of this warning, noting that, “Contrary to what you may have read or heard, NASA has in no way issued any statement regarding 3 (or 6) days of darkness in December due to a solar storm. All these rumors are absolutely false.”
Bottom Line
Earth will not experience 15 days of darkness in November 2015. The bogus story was produced by a fake news website, and simply recycled an old hoax which first circulated back in 2012.
