The event took place on Saturday, June 20 in front of hundreds of spectators as part of the city’s “100 Years of Surfing” celebration and International Surfing Day.

66 surfers piled onto the massive fiberglass board which measured 42-feet long, 11-feet wide, 16 inches thick, and weighed 1300 pounds. The board was so large that it also set a Guinness Record for largest surfboard, and required a forklift to be placed into the water.

The group rode a wave for 13 seconds, which is 3 seconds longer than required to qualify for the record. The group of riders ranged in ages from 15 to 79, and including local and pro surfers, as well as a local politician. Their total weight supported by the board was estimated to be about 10,000 pounds.

The 66-person ride smashed the previous record set by 47 people in Queensland, Australia.

The board will be placed on display at the nearby International Surfing Museum. It was said to have cost around $70,000 to $90,000 to construct.
