Future Tech: Private Luxury Floating Islands

Christie’s International Real Estate has unveiled a project which offers private, floating, man-made islands hosting luxury estates.

Everyone knows that island shopping can be an arduous task, as evidenced on the television show Island Hunters. Now such pesky details as design and location may no longer be problematic, thanks to a company which is now offering man-made, private floating islands which are portable, known as Amillarah Private Islands.

Artist renderings showing tantalizing potentials designs are sure to whet the appetite of hungry island shoppers. And with developments already planned for Dubai, Miami, and the Maldives, location should not be a problem. Said to be eco-friendly while including such necessities as swimming pools, boat docks, and greenery, the design possibilities are virtually limitless. The islands are portable, meaning they can be placed almost anywhere on earth.

Christie’s International Real Estate CEO Dan Conn noted, “Buyers are able to customize the size, shape and style of their residence, within the broadest range of locations, beginning with this first opportunity in the Maldives.”

The first set of 10 islands are set to arrive in the Maldives in a special lagoon only 25 minutes to the nearest airport. Dubai and Miami will follow with 33 and 30 islands to be built in those locations respectively.

A company vice-president referred to the islands as an “eco-friendly work of art that can be lived in, allowing consumers to not only create, but enjoy whatever kind of paradise they desire.”

Although the company didn’t disclose some of the details regarding how the islands are kept stable, and how they are anchored, they claimed the islands are “completely stable and safe from rising sea levels.”

Christie’s enlisted the services of architect Koen Olthuis and Dutch Docklands to design the islands.
