Oldest Sprinter

Hidekichi Miyazaki has set a new world record for the oldest competitive sprinter, the day after his 105th birthday. Despite the record, he said he was not happy with his time in the 100 meter race.

Finishing with a time of 42.22 seconds, Miyazaki had hoped to beat his previous best of 34.10 which he notched at the age of 103. He also said he had achieved a time of 36 seconds in practice races.

The centenarian didn’t start running until he was in his 90’s, after most of his friends he had played board games with passed away.

Miyazaki is sometimes called the “Golden Bolt” in comparison to Usain Bolt, whose pose he imitated after the race. Bolt himself recognized Miyazaki’s achievement in a tweet.

Bolt is currently the world record holder of the 100 m in which he achieved a mark of 9.58 seconds back in 2009.
