A controversial new virtual reality video game is set in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

The video game, entitled 08:46 (representing the moment American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower), is self-described as “a narrative driven experience designed for virtual reality, which makes you embody an office worker in the North Tower of the World Trade Center during the 9/11 events.”
The first-person game is designed for Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 by French developers 846 Studios.
Reaction to the game has been mixed. Some writers, such as Lauren Hockenson at The Next Web opines, “It seems illogical in its controversy — manufactured drama at the expense of people who still live the with the scars of that day and its lasting repercussions.”
YouTube debate on the game has also includes those who defend the game’s premise. One commenter suggests, “It could give kids perspective and real empathy to the situations. And a definite urge not to repeat history.”
Oculus Rift is a virtual reality system which is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2016, although a number of units are already in the hands of developers and enthusiasts. Oculus VR was acquired by Facebook in early 2014.
