The frenzy surrounding Kobe Bryant’s last game spilled over into two bizarre listings on eBay which purportedly offered bags of air from the star’s last game.
“Used Bag of Air”
A sandwich bag said to contain air captured at Bryant’s last game, along with his autograph, recently appeared on eBay with a price of $4,599.99. It wasn’t online long, however. It was removed “because the item is no longer available.” Even the seller admitted that wasn’t sure of the bag’s authenticity, stating, “I bought this from a guy off of Craigslist.”
The complete eBay listing read:
“Kobe Bryant Last Game Used Bag of Air Signed by Kobe Bryant on April 13th 2016 at Staples Center. I bought this from a guy off of Craigslist. The Autograph looks authentic to me, judge for yourself. This is your chance to own this amazing collectible. The bag reads Kobe Bryant Last Game Used Air Autograph Bag Staples Center 4-13-16 60 pts. Due to the scarcity, I will be accepting reasonable offers only. This is by PayPal only. Good luck bidding.”
That listing was probably inspired by another seller who posted a bag of air on the auction site. That person posted it with a starting price of $1, which quickly rose to $15,000 before it was removed with no explanation.
Bryant’s last game occurred on April 13 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. He scored 60 points and led his team to a comeback win.
The idea of selling air is not new. Two Canadian men have turned the practice of selling canisters of fresh Rocky Mountain air into a lucrative business. While that company specializes in the selling of fresh air to those living in areas of poor air quality, the idea of selling air from a specific event is not as common.
