Seeking Reviews for MyCleanPC

MyCleanPC is a software product that advertises on television and promises to speed up your computer by removing issues affecting speed and performance. The product is being advertised differently now than it was in 2010. Have you used it recently? We want to hear from you.

MyCleanPC is a product offered by USTechSupport, and the software appears to be based on an earlier package known as CyberDefender. According to their website, “MyCleanPC is a PC Optimization tool—downloaded right over the Internet—that will find and repair issues on your computer that may be affecting speed, performance, and how well your system works in general.” The commercial advertises a “free diagnosis” but if you want anything actually fixed, you will have to pay $39.99. And of course the software will find issues. Unless your PC just came out of the box, there will be something to clean, such as temp files or cookies or registry entries for old programs.

Based on their description, MyCleanPC is essentially a registry cleaner. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of software titles in this category available.

2010 vs 2012
MyCleanPC was heavily advertised back in 2010. At that time, their commercials used phrases such as “These are usually the telltale signs of a virus…” (See graphic below) It appears that the product they were advertising back then was marketed more of an anti-spyware or antivirus package. The commercial currently airing in 2012 does not use the word “virus” at all, nor do you see any such suggestion on their website.  It’s unclear how the product has actually changed since 2010, but it is clear that the way they are advertising it is now different.

Positive Reviews?
The MyCleanPC website is rife with positive user reviews. One of our mantras here at wafflesatnoon is that anyone can place positive reviews of their own product online. Typically a product’s website offers nothing but glowing reviews that are either written by them (or a friend) or cherry-picked from a larger pool of reviews. Notice that they don’t have any reputable entities offering glowing endorsements. In contrast, competing product CCleaner posts links to reviews by the BBC, PC World, and many others.

The Web of Trust Reputation for MyCleanPC is listed as “Very Poor” in all categories.

Bottom Line
There are many optimization tools out there. Just take a look at CNET’s highest-rated products in this category. I use the free version of CCleaner, and have found it to suit my needs. (Note that “MyCleanPC” and “CyberDefender” do not even appear on CNET’s list.) I also suggest running SuperAntiSpyware, which does a great job of getting rid of viruses, malware, and other issues.
