A loyal police dog is being credited with saving the life of a Mississippi police officer who was ambushed by three men.
Police deputy Todd Frazier approached a man in a Lincoln Town Car, described as a “suspicious vehicle,” at a rest stop late at night to see if the man inside the car needed help. As he neared the car, two men ran out from the nearby woods and attacked the officer as he fell. Frazier was cut on the forehead by a box cutter as the men began dragging him toward the woods. According to Chief Deputy Don Bass, then men then told Frazier “…they were going to slit his throat, and they were dragging him toward the woods.”
As the men dragged Frazier, the officer freed one hand long enough to press a button on a remote control which opened the door of his vehicle to release his police dog named Lucas. The black Belgian Malinois sprung out of the car and bit at least one of the suspects before all three fled into the woods. Sheriff Ricky Adam said that Lucas “had blood all over him” after biting the suspects.
The “pop mechanism” used to free Lucas is only installed in two K9 units in the county, and had only recently been installed in Frazier’s vehicle.
Frazier was treated at a nearby hospital and released. Lucas suffered no injuries. The men remain at large.
