The massive creature is believed to be a new species of titanosaur, a herbivore that lived around 95 to 100 million years ago. This creature is thought to have stood about 65 feet tall and weighed as much as 14 African elephants – about 155,000 pounds, or 77 tons – about 10 times heavier than a T. rex.

The fossils were excavated by a team of paleontologists from the Museum of Palaeontology Egidio Feruglio. They were originally discovered by a local farm worker near Trelew, Patagonia in 2011. Approximately 150 bones belonging to 7 different creatures were found at the site.

Researchers told BBC News, “Given the size of these bones, which surpass any of the previously known giant animals, the new dinosaur is the largest animal known that walked on Earth. Its length, from its head to the tip of its tail, was 40m. Standing with its neck up, it was about 20m high – equal to a seven-storey building.”
